FS: McGee GLP keyless in Ironwood

Up for sale is a really great flute from Terry McGee. It’s his Grey Larsen Preferred model (here’s Terry’s model’s page for more info http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/models.html) made in Cooktown Ironwood (here’s more info about that wood http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/materials.htm). I used this flute for years on gigs and recordings. I’ve just moved on to larger-holed flutes.

It was originally made with Terry’s MDT (Minimum Disruption Tenon; info at the bottom of this page http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/heads.html). But I found, as a semi-professional player who plays every day and takes the flute apart multiple times a day, that the MDT is not a good system. First off, with Terry’s original cork on the headjoint, it was too tight and the tenon cracked (picture of repaired crack https://app.box.com/s/ifgdhdbyk3jhx140x7db). This crack was expertly repaired by Daniel Deitch in San Francisco using carbon fiber thread–it’s an absolutely rock solid fix that will never crack again. Subsequently, trying to re-cork the inside of the headjoint was such a hassle and it wouldn’t last, that we decided to put the cork on the tenon like a normal flute and it actually WORKS BETTER both as a tuning slide and as a reliable, durable system. Thus, the flute now works great, is reliable and will not require frequent difficult cork replacements.

These flutes are no longer available new from Terry. Terry has not been making new flutes for years now.

Final reduction. That’s as low as I can go.

A really good flute. Perfect for someone who wants a small-holed flute that can play loud and rough or soft and smooth.

Hi, I would like to discuss this flute with you but as a new member I’m not approved for PMs yet. I don’t see an email address for you so I’m not sure how to proceed. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks very much! Dianne
