I saw the Tom Waits show last month in Birmingham and the night after that show, he performed in Atlanta. The set list was a bit longer in Atlanta. But, here you go, courtesy of NPR. The entire Atlanta concert. Nice recording.

He was in Ireland this weekend. I was unable to make the gigs due to a recent arrival (in the family sense).
My sister, knowing my love for the guy’s music, called me twice during the gig to let me have a listen-in. Sounded good!

If you guys are into artistic interpretation, Scarlett Johansson released a CD of all remakes of Tom Waits songs…mind you, it is a bit different…I grew up listening to This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance, so, I can appreciate what she has done on this album…
I highly recommend it solely on its high grandeur alone.
I have that album and it is really and truly and utterly crap.
Sorry but never in my life have I heard such a disaster..

Yeah, I’d recommend Closing Time or Heart of Saturday Night.
My wife and daughter are off at Grandma’s for a few days, so I watched a couple of movies last night. One was Domino with Keira Knightley. Waits did some songs for it, possibly the soundtrack. But late in it he appears as some sort of religious guy in a really ethereal role that only he could pull off. The guy’s a genius in many ways.
Closing time and Heart of Saturday Night are great albums but not really representative of what Waites has been doing for the past 20 years. His more recent stuff is more innovative and challenging. I love Mule Variations. Frank’s Wild Years is a good album to get an idea his musical diversity.
For film buffs check out his performance in Down By Law.
I rather like his role in that Ben Stiller super-hero flick, can’t recall the name of it though.

Damn, Innocent when you Dream is a gorgeous song. A back issue of fRoots I was browsing in the bathroom the other day had an interview with with Shetland fiddler James Stout , who said, (I had to go and find it)
“He’s incredible because the first thing you hear is this gravel voice, and when you listen beyond that he’s got incredible lyrics, and his slow melodies are just like hymn tunes. You could hear a choir singing his melodies in a church. When you hear that balance, somebody who has a rough edge to their voice juxtaposed with a melody that’s angelic and church-like…”

I have heard his music many times, but, have never really knew who it was…now that I am doing some background searching, it is amazing how many of his songs I know…
Either by himself, or, from a cover by another artist…
I picked up Closing Time and Orphans really cheap on EBay…they should be arriving any day…looking forward to it.
