For those say their hands are too small...

enough said.

Nice playing. Is that a D though? Sounds kind of high. Might be an Eb? Which would also help with the hand thing.

Yes, it’s an Eb flute.
Nonetheless I hate this child.

Then there is Willie Bays

No, not enough… you’ve just led me to spend a happy quarter of an hour watching all four of their videos with an unavoidable smile!

And that one too!

I had to view this thread just when I was thinkin’ I’m getting kinda spiffy with my rolls and crans…

Be interesting to know the span of his hands, and the span between hole centers.

Ah to have the flexible digits and hands of youth! For a lot of us though, arthritis and other problems kick in. I’ve been having issues with that myself, as a result of 30 years of making the flutes more than anything and its starting to affect my flute playing, pipe playing and guitar playing. I’ve been finding on the rare occasions I play flute recreationally that my small handed flutes fit the bill and the regular or large handed flutes that I used to be able to play are increasingly uncomfortable. I am looking forward to playing a bunch of Requinta in G and F with their much narrower embouchures this summer.

Wish I could play like that when I was his age… Sigh!

I’d seen both youngsters’ clips before, but glad to be reminded of them. Grand stuff. And I note both use pretty much ideal “standard” hold and don’t shoulder prop.

I saw Willie Bays play during this time period right after the Friday Harbor camp. Of course everyone was impressive since it was a faculty and student concert in Mount Vernon. I remember how enthusiastic he was about his lessons with Marcus Hernon saying “He changed my life!”. There is more to it than youthful flexibility, both in mind and hands. Youthful enthusiasm can not be underestimated. That is something I do have some control over and hopefully can maintain for a lifetime.

They are both gaining upper-hand finger-reach by having their flute high on the index finger with bottom joint well down the flute, so that the bottom section of that finger is angled.

Doing that I can reach well beyond the holes on my small-handed Burns. But should I ?

Its not the size that matters its the stretch!! Many of my friends children have a bigger hand stretch than me. and my hands don’t look that small and are bigger than said children. Not taking away from the talent of the lad though. very impressive.

The kid is young but definitely doesn’t have small hands. Seems kind of tall too. He is high up on the chair while tapping his feet.

He’s talented for sure. But I’d be more impress if he were a few years younger. There are virtuoso kids all over youtube no more than 7 or 8.

Seriously. You have to be off your rocker. The kid is a beast.
