For beginners: Needed or no? (+Pipemaker advice)

I am looking seriously (finally) into wading back into the uilleann pool after just a brief dip 6 years ago. My question relates mostly to chanter keys, but also to spare reeds, synthetic vs. leather bags, etc. I am trying to keep cost down, but don’t want to wind up having to upgrade sooner than I expected either.

*Chanter keys: Really only considering a Cnat key; is this the wise choice, or should I not bother with any keys?

*Spare reed: Do some of you stick with the one good reed and hope to avoid catastrophe? While I dread it I imagine I will try my hand and reedmaking; but to start wondering if I should order a 2nd reed with the pipes.

I am looking into a practice set from either David Daye, Seth Hamon, or considering going further and have been looking hard at Benson/Cornelius pipes. Cost is an issue, but obviously a good quality instrument + wait time factors in too. I have heard all good about all 3 of these makers, but any experience or advice regarding these, a PM would be appreciated.

Thanks, sorry if it’s long!

Cnat and Fnat keys are useful but not essential

A spare reed is a handy fall-back but if you have one good chanter reed, and you don’t mess with it too much, it should do you for several years.
