i just recently was playing some tunes with a fellow fluter. we decided to break out our short f flutes. mine is a beautiful boosey rs pratten perfected, quite a player, cocus wood 8 keyed. my friends was a bryne f flute, blackwood keyless.
review of the byrne f flute:
the byrne short ‘f’ flute was easily on par with the boosey, if not better in some ways. if i didn’t already own a ‘f’ flute, i would get one made by byrne w/out hesitation. beautiful, elegant, sleek instrument. plenty volume, gorgeous tone. i kept reaching for it, over my boosey. easy on the ears, easy on the fingers, and easy to blow.
f flutes are a blast, for those who haven’t played one. fun to travel with, easy to pack etc. and sound great outdoors. thought i would submit my review in case anyone might have an interest.
no idea what byrne charges. as you know jim, a phone call to bryan gets you the straight scoop on all that type of info. i can only imagine what your byrne ‘d’ flute must be like after playing this shortie. damn nice flute!
Yes, I took the flute to a good freind’s party last night,
the devil made me imbibe a little catnip,
and it all came together–the flute, the technique,
the bottom octave. A couple of hours of wonderful
flute.
that’s grand jim, you must of been in heaven. so you introduced yourself to that elusive bottom ‘d’, did you? or is it the other way around, it introduced itself to you?
That’s a relief. At least you can get out of there after a time. Flute Hell would be…what? Only Pakistani D sticks for the damned, and the devils are all playing Eb sessions?
Ralph Sweet said that he was redesigning his F folk flute. He has some other things on the table right now and said that it would be a few months before it would be ready!
Cracked Pakistani D sticks and no superglue, Teflon tape or beeswax.
Just played/heard a lovely prototype F flute, but I don’t know if I should say by whom yet. But it was grand; similar experience to rama’s only this one compared favorably over a Hawkes Excelsior Sonorous (or however it’s spelled).
