No, not a pedicure for fish (which by the way do not actually have feet), but a pedicure by fish. Apparently, they eat the dead skin collecting on and around your feet and toes.
Virginia state regulations make no provision for regulating fish pedicures. But the county health department — which does regulate pools — required the Ho’s salon to switch from a shallow, tiled communal pool that served as many as eight people to individual tanks in which the water is changed for each customer.
You know, guppies are a pretty hearty fish, but If I had changed the water daily or even weekly, I would think that the stress would have killed them. I wonder if the little carpies can handle that kind of stress.
Any small fish will do this, even minnows. Just hang you feet off the boat near a bank of weeds and all the baby fish will come out after a few minutes for a nibble. Trouble only starts when a muskie decides he’d like to join in.
This is true. My goldfish like to suck on my fingers if I let them dangle in their tank. It doesn’t really hurt, but it does tickle sometimes (one of my goldfish is pretty big).
Been there, done that. Bluegills are real good at this, but yeah, muskie and pike not so much. I have video of a northern trying to take out our camera up in Canada. Great stuff.
Mine do, too! Have you ever given then peas? It’s fun to take a (frozen then thawed) pea, de-shell it, and hold it in your fingers. They will come up and suck it right out. It’s cute.
Well, ok, but don’t come crying to us when one of them chokes!
I should think the fish pedicure would be banned on a cruelty to animals basis. I mean, just because they WILL do that, doesn’t mean they SHOULD do it. Would you want to live out what is probably a drastically shortened life in ghastly surroundings? Who knows what the water quality is like for those fish!!!
Goldfish swallow rocks larger than peas all the time and poop them out. Have you ever seen them “graze” at the bottom of a tank? They’re not going to choke on a pea.
-Here in Washington state the rationale in outlawing fish pedicures is that the fish are tools of the trade and must be sanitized between uses/customers to comply with regulations of the nail & pedicure trade.
-As one solon put it: “You can’t sanitize a fish.”
