finger memory or musical mind?

i still make a lot of mistakes but sometimes, when i do rehearsels, i’m miles away, not concentrating on what i’m playing, but i don’t make a mistake. when i’m really enjoying what i play, i don’t think of anything else, but now i think of other things.
i wonder if it’s finger memory, or my musical mind that keeps me in tune. or it could be a combination of both?

Probably a bit of both. Sometimes, trying too hard actually makes you play WORSE.

One thing I’ve found is strange, is that sometimes, when I play the wrong note, finger-wise, I will have used the breath pressure for the correct note, rather than the incorrect one. So not only do I play the wrong note, but it doesn’t sound good either because I’ve either under or over blown it.

could it be that this happens near the end of your rehearsels john? that’s when my fingers give out on the low D. in that case 't has nothing to do with finger memory, just fatigue. this will better in time by practice.

but if your fingers are not tired out, and you blow the wright amount of air with wrong finger position, then probably the finger memory isn’t that good.

besides plenty rehearsels, i wonder if it’s better to practice just on the low D or to swap keys in order to develop better finger memory?
the goal is that our musical mind and our finger memory are equaly strong.
(or maybe i’ll better shut up and practice!)
THE MAIN THING IS TO GET A TRILL OUT OF EVERY TUNE, i think this can only happen with only music in your head, but sometimes we drift off

I too find myself with a similar problem. Many times when playing, my mind wonders to other thoughts and I play horribly.

Recently, someone I hadn’t met before started coming to our slow sessions. He plays whistle, but mostly flute. I watched him one night and he plays with his eyes closed. All the time.

This gave me an idea. During practice, I started closing my eyes. Not only that, but I tried to hear the song in my head as I was playing it. By golly it works most of the time.

When my thoughts are too distracting despite this method, I just call it a day and put the whistle away because there’s no point in continuing.

So give this a try.

Mike

i play with my eyes closed aswell, sometimes when i’m distracted i continue anyway, till there only music left in my head, untill my hands give out. it’s not a real problem to me, i’m just interested in the definition of finger memory and musical mind.

Yeah, it’s finger memory. But I just think it’s cool how my breath memory is there when the finger memory isn’t.

this means your a better musician in your musical mind then in your hands john, i think your probably playing better then myself.
i also understand this definition of finger and musical mind now.i believe the main thing is to aline both by getting a trill out of every tune with only music in our hole body, not only our heads. being a river of music
