with the onset of winter my set is doing all sorts of fun things. I am trying to figure out where I have a leak and was hoping someone had some ideas. When I am just playing the practice set everything is airtight. I can plug the neck and squeeze and she’s tight as a drum. When I plug in the mainstock I get a rush of air that I can’t isolate. I’ve tried waving bits of light plastic wrap around etc in trying to isolate the leak but can’t seem to find where it is. I’m pretty sure the drones and regs are tight so it leads me to the mainstock.
I’ve re-wrapped the mainstock so don’t think it’s at the connection, though I may be wrong about that. It sounds like it is escaping from where the bag ties into the cup, but like I said, when in practice mode it’s tight.
Could it be something with the drone switch? It leaks with the drones on or off but could it be forcing air back out of the cup? On this set (a Lucky Ganesh Special), it has a nut, a threaded washer thing and a leather gasket. I’ve messed around with that but to no avail.
Any ideas? Just through 'em out there. If I can’t fix it, I’ll bug someone who knows what their doing after the holidays.
it sounds as though you plug the main stock when wanting to play in practice set mode, is that right? If it doesn’t leak then, then your stock is tied in well. So it could be a drone switch leak, or it could be a leak from where the mainstock fits into the main stock cup.
If the cup fitting is leaking maybe it needs more binding, but then, do your drones and stock tend to pop out across your lap and onto the neighbor’s floor when playing fast reels?
All seems to point to a drone switch leak. What is a Ganesha set? Is it a Pakistani set?
Cheers,
after sealing the bag and bellows and connection, i could detect no leak in the practice set portion of it.
i removed each of the regs (and their reeds) and blew into them to see if there was air leaking. I fixed a couple pads and added tension to a couple springs and now they’re fine even under greater pressure than is exerted during playing
I discovered a leak around the plate for the bass reg and sealed that…that was the one that had me thinking it was the cup connection while it wasn’t. check the solders on the joint between the bass reg and that plate as well…including the tiny parts between the reg and mainstock (hard to get in there sometimes).
because my set was originally of pakistani manufacture…just about everything that could leak, did, so I became pretty skilled at tracking down stray air and plugging it without resorting to ‘blowing smoke’…
Yup, she’s Pakistani’s alright. I thought it might be the plate, but can’t figure out the best way to seal it. How does the drone switch work? In other words, how do I adjust it?
Unfortunately I am out of binding material so trying that is going to have to wait a few days.
Yup, waiting anxiously for that new set. The sister set to yours I believe. Mine’s a 4/5th set or something- four drones and two regs. Coco and silver with moose antler. Oh baby.
In any case, I like practising with the drones which is why I’m trying to get the full set up and running again. Was working great until the humidity dropped. Same thing happened last year.
