field microphones

if you practrice at least 2 hours a day, it might be well worth it to find a good microphone, wich i believe is most important for recordings. but there’s not that many good microphones around that are self powered.
i discovered that the hidden secret of the akg c 1000s is, that it’s a mono mic :really: all very well if you can put your device on mono…

i believe there’s 2 mics well worth considering around 200$, most of you think i’m stonemad of course, and buy a second low D instead :stuck_out_tongue: , but i’ve no whoa :frowning:

-rode nt3 is very sensible, can pick up everything of a whistle, and it’s a true condencer. if the I/P sensitivity of your recording device is approximately 10mV, the NT3 will be suitable to use without a separate pre amp. http://www.portlandmusiccompany.com/nt3.html so without fanthom power(i compare them running on 9v batteries) this mic from sony might be better

btw. i’ll buy them on amazon germany, where they both are priced at 200 euro’s.

It’s probably not as good as you’re looking for, but I just ordered the ECM-MS907 which is a nice, small mic so I can listen to myself without too much fuzz (I tried using a radio shack dynamic ball mic, but it sounded like crrrrap).

(A tip – I’m in Canada, but I ordered the mic from etronics.com for $70 US. Then I realized there was a “Sony store” up the road that would probably have it in stock. It was $149.99 Cdn there before taxes, and the order from the states came to $133 Cdn or so after everything).

The mic just shipped, and I’m getting my two Albas (a Q1 and a Low D – yay!) today, so I might be able to test it out soon.

Of course, I know basically nothing about mics or recording, so I’m just going to plug it into my PC and hit record and see what happens

I know this is a pretty lame post, but on the subject of microphones, what is the best off the shelf mini jack mic to plug into my computer? something relatively inexpensive I can pick up in town. Is there such a thing?

I would like to know if anyone has ever played with the idea of an electric whistle? Some sort of pick ups mounted on the whistle.

i don’t know while people ask about home recording microphones, while this topic is about field recording mics

if i did home recordings, i’d probably go for a samson co1, i had to buy a pre-amp then aswell. but i couldn’t use this without fanthom power http://www.americanmusical.com/st/aspx/i-SAM+C01/en/item.htm
now this is studio quality for a very low price!

i think your whistle grip would be out of balance after clipping on the mic. or pick up.

Along with the microphone, is there software out there you have to buy to record a mp3? I am using a dell with MS XP…do I already have something in here??? Sorry…technology deficient here…

Thanks in advance!

Nancy

Windows sound recorder is allready on windows. Pretty basic program though.

Oooohhhhh!! I found it!!! and just tried it out with my own voice. Perfect for a beginner like me…I just wanted to hear my own music…

Does it save as an mp3???

Sorry for all the questions…obviously WAAAAYYYYY off topic!!

Nancy

No it only saves as .wav file, but I am sure if you went to www.zdnet.com and searched the downloads there for wav converter you will find something. I use cdex it is free and is good for ripping copy protected audio cd’s.

Plenty of free software will convert wav’s to mp3’s. Music Matchbox, Winamp I believe, and there are others, including software that comes with cd-r’s. Look at www.tucows.com. I’ve seen one or two apps that did nothing but convert file formats. Windows sound recorder may or maynot get you by. It will record up to 60 seconds now. It used to only let you go 7 seconds. Most real recording software cost real money from what I’ve seen, but there probably is, somewhere, a good freeware app to take care of it. (It’s been a while since I tried messing with that kind of software)

A friend told me about this app. But he said this is a later version than his. I can’t speak for it firsthand, but it looks fairly capable for being freeware.
