That’s what it looks like. There doesn’t appear to be a foot joint, just a one-piece body starting from from the barrel all the way down to C.

You might be right Doug. She was tough on that first flute. And I did have CA glue on hand for flute reapairs anyway.
As for the heat thing and the quality of the plastic though. We just don’t know what the composition of the material is at this point. I’ve tried to find specs on grenaditte since 2007 or so with no success to date. So Guo has held that close to the vest.
Many of us play delrin flutes. I like my wooden flutes. I like my delrin flutes (well most of them) too. Remember how the traditional flute world felt when they started showing up? Seems to me the tradition has been well served by many makers using delrin for their products. Delrin is an appropriate material for a flute. Delrin is very well suited in high temperature situations. After all it is used as mechanical bearing material all around us. It is durable. It is dense. And it is plenty sturdy when the parts are designed well. Anyone here ever ride a bike with a Simplex Prestige derailluer (or any of the Ofmega delrin componenets)?
ABS resin may be appropriate in some instances as well. I like my Yamaha 300 recorders just fine.
We just don’t know what grenaditte is other than a proprietary plastic! So we really do not know how sturdy these flutes are or are not. Pearl has started offering Grenaditte flutes and piccolos recently too. How do we get a Guo flute tour going? I’m not an instant fan or an instant critic of these things. I would like to get my hands on one and see how it is made and how it plays.

I worked for a manufacturing plant years ago. We made products for the military and for NASA. I remember testing some small Delrin wafers that slotted together. They were designed to be used as a survival heat source. It is surprising how much heat energy is stored in Delrin. The little Delrin wafers would burn for a long time and give off a lot of heat, probably toxic though.
Our school brass instructor’s apparently ordered some (though not just for our wee school). Summer holidays just now, but I’m intrigued to see one close up when he gets them in.
While these may avoid such environmentally unfriendly processes as electroplating (soldering and polishing aren’t so bad except maybe on an industrial scale), the derivation of plastic from petroleum is certainly environmentally unfriendly! But then, so is mining for silver and nickel.
Right. But let’s remember we do not know what the plastic is that Guo is using at this point. Industry has in recent years moved to the development of bio-plastics which use plant material as the base for the plastic. Martin Guitar now uses an ebony substitute on many of its guitars called Richlite which is a bio-plastic. Who knows what is being used for these flutes?
I will note that nowhere in my reading have I seen a statement that grenaditte is a bio-plastic. The Guo literature does compare the sound of grenaditte to bamboo but that’s it. Nowhere do they say grenaditte is a bamboo derived plastic. And I would assume that if it were a bio-plastic that they would have the good sense to advertise it as such.

I suspect its some sort of polystyrene, instead of a bio-plastic. They would be wise to use it as it actually has decent musical properties. But any plastic unspecified labelled as “environmentally friendly”? I doubt it.
You may be right Casey. And I have similar doubts about the “environmentally friendly” bit myself. Plastics versus precious metals, what’s environmentally friendly about any of it? I am just saying, “We do not really know at this point”.
I ride a motor scooter. Before I purchased it I did all the due diligence I could about various manufacturers. I bought a Kymco bike made in Taiwan. And it has been a good bike so far. The marketing blurbs on the bike are laughable. It is as though the Kymco Marketing Department used a “desirable qualities” phrase generator to write the English brouchures. It could be that Guo contracts out to the same marketing outfit.

Given the choice for petroleum use, making plastic seems better than burning it. Of course with the bio-plastics one has to ask how much fossil fuel was used to plant, fertilize, and process the crop to make an oil suitable for plastics.
