Ho Lee Cow!

only a decade ago!!!

FS: engraved one-of-a-kind sterling Copeland D

I read through all eight pages of that thread. And I had thought people only got nasty on the Proctology forum

Denny, you are our evil collective memory, our dastardly Druid.

Dunno, but there’s plenty I’d rather have for the same money!

the ad made it a one hit in Google on either of the quotes

Well now, if its in the key of “D”… that’s what this newbie is learning on! hmmmm

  1. What makes it a “one-of-a-kind”? Surface design? What about the box?
  2. Is that the same whistle from a decade ago? (as I didn’t see the old image from decade ago)
  3. Anyone burn a candle from both ends simultaneously?
  1. the engraving
  2. shrug fairly likely, as the seller quoted from a decade old thread here.
  3. not so much the last three decades

Yes, it is the same whistle. I remembered it too. That particular eBay Seller has bought/sold just about every high quality whistle imaginable in the last ten years or so.

There is a long tradition of engraving instruments both for embellishment and presentation purposes. Pipes frequently have engraved silver fittings. Brass instruments were frequently embellished with engraving. Banjos, well ok, I know what most people think of banjos already.

If you like engraved instruments, talk to a custom gun maker. That’s where most of the best engraving work is done these days in the US. Some work is still done by hand. It’s tedious work. But much of the current world of engraving is accomplished using CO2 lasers and CNC driven milling machines.

I looked into learning engraving at one time myself. Bought a few tools and played around a bit with it.

I recall a few engraved 'dogs and Gens too. The gentleman that did the engraving posted here once but I can’t seem to dig up the thread. (The mind is the first thing to go.)

Feadoggie

go? where?

Much lusted after by the whistle fraternity!!You will NOT be disappointed

I wonder which fraternity that would be. And whether they have a chapter on my campus

right behind the “centzu$” what goes around comes around

I love this stuff… and I do know the engraving doesn’t improve the playing, but, the beauty just wreaks of niceeeee!

I came across an article about engraving awhile back…
“Lighthearted Flourishes: Richard Degel marries technique with artistry in his Boston hand-engraving shop”
http://syrinxflute.com/pdfs/TechnologySU06.pdf (hope it opens)

I knew about the gunsmiths engraving by hand, and I do appreciate the “hand-engraving” craftsmanship over the machined stuff (some of it is ok), but, my “real” interest lies with “why” we humans need to “mark” things in the first place beyond the utilitarian function. Maybe thats what makes us human.

Lastly, cemetery monument dealers have also adapted the engraving/etching technology (put down hammer & chisel), utilizing software, CO2 lasers, CNC, etc. for some nice grave markers. Maybe I’ll save up my pennys for a “final” note grave marker “engraved of course”… learning this music scale is killing me. Maybe the mind is already gone.

once ya start making & using tools it’s hard to know when to stop

I don’t particularly like anything Steve Martin has done “except” the banjo playing. I could listen to that all day / anyday to the detriment of my learning pennywhistling.

One of the world’s best engravers, working on one of the world’s best flutes, if you ever wondered what the modern hand engraving process looks like:

I’ll pass.

About engraving, Highland pipes are often engraved.

My favourite pattern is the one seen in this set of Hendersons from the 1950s, owned and played by our member here Jeff Cullen.

There’s a guy doing fantastic engraving nowadays, David Davidse:

OMG… did I say OMG!

Now that’s what “tweaking” and “added value” is all about! Thanks!

Eyecandy at its best! Thanx pancelticpiper

I can’t play the whistle, BUT, there’s nothing wrong with my eyes

Right now, I’m saving up for an $11 Acorn Whistle (I read alot about’em), and maybe I’ll consider having it engraved “tip-to-toe” for that “tweaked value added”, then, I’ll have a “one of a kind” whistle

Thank you, Pancelticpiper. A great link!

That was like strolling through an art gallery. Truly magnificent work.
