I’ve recently seen some great Eisenhower quotes…especially his warning in his farewell speech against the industrial military complex (I believe he called it the “iron triangle”):

“the potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

Another great Eisenhower quote: “Every gun that is made, every warship that is launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”

Notice what state Eisenhower’s (a native Texan) presidential library is in? He apparently had some pretty strong feelings about Texas.

Still, it can be fun to have someone stir things up from time to time. When stirring things up, this is probably the best place (i.e. the pub, as opposed to the whistle, flute or pipes forums, as I’m slowly learning).

I wish we lived in a Christian pacifist communist country.

The Amish would fit this definition perfectly if they were their own nation.

I read in a book on the Amish that in the 400 years that they have lived in the United States, there has never been a single recorded homicide, and they take care of every member of their society and they love Jesus.

No, it’s not. Mabey I could or should have said “Christian socialism?” Whatever the Amish have in terms of their taking care of all members of their society, avoiding violence at all costs, hard work, and genuine communal self-reliance (they accept no kind of government assistance, even social security), I would like to have that for the entire country.

Cran - while there’s a lot of aspects of the Amish and Mennonite culture to admire, they aren’t without their faults, too. I once knew a sheriff in an Amish area of Ohio that had some very hard problems with the child abuse in Amish families that were reported to him.

Again - just as there are many great RC priests, there are great Amish and Mennonite families. But, just as the hierachy of the RC Church has contributed to abuse by covering it up, so has the Amish and Mennonite communities in a lot of cases.

I know that the Mennonites have problems, missy. All people do. One of my newer friends is a Quaker who was born and raised in a more conservative Mennonite Church. Anabaptism is so interesting to me. That’s a major part of the reason I am learning German. All people have problems, I guess it’s the ideals of pacifism, communal living, and all the members of the given society supporting and caring for one another other.
