Yes to all of the above…
I highly recommend using the search feature to browse the archives; there’s a lot of informative palaver there, both objective and subjective.
That said, the combinations possible are as endless as players’ preferences. Experimentation is in order. As for me, after running through a number of cheapies - most of which I didn’t like, but some of which I did - and a few expensive ones, I personally have settled on a handful of whistles (about six) which fit my preference and playing style.
Good luck in your search (hint, hint).
What would those six be?
I have played the fife and some inexpensive whistles most of my life, and play fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass in Old-Time String Bands. Recently I have started playing the whistle in band settings with fiddle, guitar and bass accompaniment.
I am getting a Busman whistle to play D tunes as well as G and A. I was playing Clarke Celtic and Sweet Tones recently.
So, I am wondering what other whistles I might try and the reasons others play a variety of different whistles. My thoughts would be to try and get a whistle in the Key of G and A. And, if this seems like a good thing, what one might recommend to start and what might be recommended at the high end for these Keys?
Man, you have opened Pandora’s Box with the question about which is best! Everyone has different reasons for selecting the whistles they do.
As far as the “high end” whistles, go to this link (found on the CF main page):

There is lots of information and links to tons of MFG’s there. There has been a surge of newer MFG’s lately that are not listed though. Serpent nad Syn Whistles come to mind.
Our personal favorite MFG’s currently are Alba, Dixon and Hoover. Serpent is working his way up there too. I have a Burke on the way and that may sniggle its way on the list as well.
Generation Eb nickel
Sweetone D black
Copeland high D nickel
Thin weasel C cocus
O’Riordan low F traveler
Copeland low D brass
I have two high D whistles because the Sweetone goes where I dare not take the Copeland. I also have a Susato Kildare Eb and a Sweetone C laying about, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get rid of them.
hi,sorry raymond i guess its bad form to ask a question b4 checkin the archives lesson learnt hint hint

No worries, mate - I wasn’t chiding, justing trying to help. I’ve been on this board since its first incarnation - mostly as a lurker - so I got the benefit of direct exposure. But my memory is spotty! I find myself going back to the archives a lot.
