ebony supplier

Hi ,Mark Donohoe here, long time lurker, first time poster and can I say what a great resource this forum is for both novice and experienced pipers for all things piping.
Over the years I have on occasion been asked for information on a good source of ebony. For the first few years when I started making pipes I found the supplies to be very erratic and the quality a bit hit and miss, but for what ever reason, in the last few years, the availability of ebony has become reasonably consistent. For any budding pipemakers looking for a good supplier of ebony ,here’s the ebay shop of the supplier I’ve been using for awhile http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-Ebony-blanks-spindles-woodturning-cue-butt-blanks-/261506013060?pt=UK_Crafts_Other_Crafts_EH&hash=item3ce2f91784
I have found him easy to deal with and the ebony is of good quality.

Its a shame the Brazilian kingwood blanks aren’t a bit longer the grain looks amazing.

Exotic Woods is a good source in the US. We have been buying Ebony fingerboard blanks from them for years. I bought some turning blanks from them a few months ago that were very nice.

@ Mark ,Have you used it before Whats it like to turn, ? I did notice it was only 320 as it does look rather fancy

No,I’ve never worked with kingwood but with grain like that they’d make lovely instruments. I made a few chanters with cocobolo which can be equally beautiful but inconsistent with the colour and grain. It comes in colours from a dull chocolate brown to a lovely fiery red with black streaks . Unless to can hand pick the billets yourself you never know what your going to get.

Brazilian Kingwood is a great timber for pipes. I sent some billets years ago to Kirk Lynch who made a couple of sets from it. It is the best for pipes of the true rosewoods. Loree oboes uses it as an alternative to ABW for high-end oboes. They call it Violet Wood. Geoff Wooff made a Bb chanter from billets I sent to him. He thought it produced excellent tone. I have seen other makers use it as well. There is a Mexican Kingwood which is a different species and no where near as good for pipes as the Brazilian Kingwood; so be aware that not all Kingwood is the same.
