I was messing around with my D drones yesterday. I have an extra A/G drone on my set. I tuned the extra drone up to Bb and the baritone drone up to Eb and stopped the tenor and bass. This gave me a lovely Eb chord which sounded great when I played “G” tunes on the Bb chanter. Now I must try figure out which regulator keys could be added to the mix.
There certainly are some fun things you can do with drones if you dare step out of the tradition. But, as one fine pipe maker has put it, the drones are only there to add to the dynamic plate and offer a subtle carpeted background to the music being played.
C, D and G on the regs. will work but will probably need some fine-tuning.
Yes, the G sounds good, particularly the bass reg G.
