Ever groan inwardly when you think you’ve reached a level of worldly experience, then realize that you’ve been naive about yet ANOTHER matter/issue?
Well, I’ve found the Fiddle Forum. Nice little forum. Not much OT. Polite and informative. But OH SO DISSAPOINTING!!! they dont have WhOA, but they certainly have VBOA (Violin Bow Obsessive Acquisition Distorder)
Why? Well, here I was, smug bastard that I am, pleased as a cat in the cream that I’d escaped from WHOA with my new pursuit of the fiddle. After all, how hard could it be? I have my fiddle, I have my bow, I have my rosin, and all the sheet music from whistling, I’m basically done, right? And its been weeks since my mouse clicked its way to Chris Abell’s website just to gaze at the beautiful photo of the blackwood D whistle that looks like the one I’ll own someday but havent yet brought myself to order. Yet. Its just a matter of time…
Well, I’m older and wiser now. The fiddlers may not be buying multiple fiddles, but Good Lord they’re no better if not worse than whistlers. An entire forum devoted to strings. What brand to you like? I use Thomastik Dominants, but I use a Bla de Blah for my E string because its just too bright. Oh my, the Dominants just dont do on my nice fiddle, sound way too muddy, I prefer the Deedlle Dee brand, and the Faahdlee Foo brand for the E string, of course…Oh, whell where do you get those strings? Well, Wudlddee Wuz sells them, but you can also go to the Tweedlee Dee site for better service… How often do you change them? Once every two months at least…at $50 a set.
Another whole forum devoted to bows. Mine is made of this wood. Oh, Mine is made of graphite, and its soooo light. Horsehair or fiberglass hair? How often do you rehair your bow? Oh I just bought my $700 Coda graphite as a backup bow three months ago and now I need to rehair it already. Oh I foudn a bla bla bla wood bow for only $2400.00…
Dont get me wrong, I’m not mockin us whistlers, and Im not mockin the nice people on the whistle forum. I just wonder if its human nature to take a simple pleasure like music and, well, go nuts over all the wonderful this and that you can do with your instrument. I certainly dont mock, cause there I was this afternoon surfing the CodaBow site eyeing their wondrful line of graphite bows. Somehow my Glasser fiberglass just doesnt seem adequate. Excuse me while I set down this half-eaten apple and finish typing cause the world sure looks different now…
I’m terrified to think what the Kazoo forum looks like…
