I am quite new to whistling, and have thus far enjoyed my sopranino Susato in D. This past week I received my newly purchased Dixon Low D, and though I think its great, I really have nothing to compare it to (in terms of other low whistles). Its really quiet in the lower octave, and the tone is considerably more breathy than the susato I own. However, I have heard the Dixon Low D is easier to play than the Susato.
Did I make the right purchase?
Yes. I used to own a Susato low D and now own a Dixon low D. The holes on the Susato are much harder to cover because they are bigger and somewhat oval shaped. Also, the tone is like … well, it sounds like PVC. The Dixon is much easier to play. Yes, it’s breathier than some other low D whistles, but it doesn’t sound like PVC, and for the price, it’s hard to beat. When Tony figures out how to add the brass tuning slide to his low D, the tone should improve. I have heard that it did for his soprano whistles.
