Anyone with a silver mouth piece whistle notice a major discoloration where the lips touch? Just got a whistle and played it that day and the next day on the area of the silver mouth piece it looks like the finish is coming off. Any ideas or tips? Do not know what happened but it looks horrible and I cannot seem to fix it.
Silver or nickel? who made the whistle?
I usually don’t fret about metal discoloring – its part of a used look that I don’t mind.
But if its silver, I’d use a jeweler’s cloth and just give it a wipe down when I’m done with it.
The whistle is a high end whistle and is marked 925 silver. I know this is not the makers fault. Do I have …Dragon breath??? ![]()
If silver comes in contact with sulfur compounds (such as found in some foods), a particularly tough variant of tarnish can be formed which is a slightly different color than most tarnish, appearing to be a grey-green color.
This is very difficult to polish away or buff out; it’s more durable, unfortunately, then the regular silver around it, so caution is required.
I would take consolation that the discoloration is protecting the metal underneath it, and leave it be.

Thanks for the help. I used paste silver polish and it took it out. However, there is a lot of fine scratches now but I can live with them. My husband is sure they can be buffed out if needed. Now my husband is not afraid to kiss me anymore because I do not have Dragon breath! ![]()

If you can polish the stain away, you can use beeswax (non-toxic/comes in flavors) to protect the silver from Salt and Hydrochloric Acids from your mouth.
If you want an alternative… I suggest rubber “chew guards” used for pipe smokers. Most specialty smoke shops have rubber rings, used on pipe mouth pieces, to protect the tips from teething/chewing. These come in stylish colors too

Boy, thanks a lot those are great ideas. You certainly have a lot of great info to share.
