Delrin flute question

Hi.

Can anyone who has played the Walt Sweet Shannon and Dave Copley’s delrin compare the two.

I am trying to decide which to order (it will be my first flute).

I am specifically interested in hearing about hole spacing/ergonomics (I have smaller hands), hole size, volume, and whether one is easier to play in tune than the other.

I know there are many topics on beginner/delrin flutes, but I would like opinions on Shannon vs Copley if anyone has one.

Thanks

Both very good flutes; particularly at their price points. Good sound, comfortable fingering, not too heavy. And, again, good sound.

Significant difference is in the fingering of the C nat. The Sweet fingers C nat best at OXX XOO. I got the best C nat (for me) on the Copley at OXO XXX.

And personally, I like Copley’s Ellipse embouchure better than his Squared Ellipse.

Both are great people to work with.

Doubt that you’d go wrong with either one, and there would be a good resale market for either if you decided your purchase just didn’t fit you.

Best wishes.

Steve

I just tried your fingerings on my Copley delrin and found your C nat fingering to give me way too sharp of a note. I actually found my regular OXX OOO to be a bit sharp too and OXX XOO to be right on. But I’m not going to switch because I can’t learn different fingerings for different flutes . Just shows that even flutes as consistent as David Copley’s differ one to another and that everyone’s embouchure is different.

Thanks for the response, Steve.

It’s probably not reasonable to expect that I would get a definite answer when asking such a question.

I’ll just have to pick one and try it out for a while…

Thanks,

Mark

You won’t go wrong with either one. Just give whichever one you choose sufficient time to show you what it can offer before making a final decision. And, as mentioned above, either holds its value for resale purposes if you decide it’s not the one for you.

For what it’s worth, Dave Copley has a Delrin D available immediately as does Doc Jones at the Irish Flute Store. Walt Sweet should have a pretty quick turnaround time on his instruments. So you should be able to be playing in pretty short order if you decide to go with either of these.

Best wishes.

Steve
