Daytrip to Dublin

A well known UK budget airline has recently transferred much of it business to my local airport. Bargains to be had include day return flights to Dublin for less than £30 all inclusive!!!

Flight time for me is about an hour, consequently I’ll have about nine hours in the City. So having booked my ticket for next month my question for you all is:

If you had nine hours to yourself in Dublin, what would you do?

At least the first time, I’d go to the Guinness brewery at St. James gate.

Didn’t SteveShaw recently mention seeing the Book of Kells and some some other illuminated manuscripts at Trinity College? I would do that.

I’d want to find some good music, but I don’t have any idea how you’d do that.

It sounds like a nice deal to get to go spend the day there. Have fun!

Trinity Library, St Stephen’s Green, O’Connell Street, Ha’penny Bridge at LOW tide. Yer man’s O’Shea’s stone carvings on the Embassy (American Embassy, is it?) of Moles playing snooker & stuff. It’s yonks since I was in Dublin, but back then the Quays had a reputation for having good pubs with trad music. It may be different now.
The Bronze Statue of Cu Chullainn in the Post Office in O’Connell Street is worth seeing.
Oh, and St. Michan’s church with the Crusader - but I hear you aren’t allowed to shake hands with him these days.

Hard to do “it” in a day, unless you’re James Joyce.

In so short a time span, just walk around the place. See where your feet take ye.

Something around every corner.

Avoid any Pub named after a Writer/ Poet/Playwright.

Walk along the Liffey, up one side and down the other, but stop at the Phoenix Park.

That’s time to turn back

Slan,
D.

I did! One day is a hassle. Have a plan.

Book of Kells exhibition is a must, even if you’re a pagan like me. They’ve done it so well - give it an hour and a half. Don’t miss this. Short stroll from there to the national museum (have a butty and pot of tea in the café there - not half bad!) where you can see the prehistoric gold collection. You will be stunned by that, I promise. I don’t like stuffy museums, but this is so different! Apart from that do what Dub says. Go and sit next to Paddy Kavanagh if that aggressive, smelly tramp isn’t still there (see Dub’s avatar, which shows the bench minus tramp)! Dub is not that tramp, I hasten to add! As for music, you may see street music during the day at Temple Bar, but I didn’t see too much going on till evening. Someone else’s mileage may vary!

It is a must on a longer trip, but it’s not at the best end of town and it kind of saps your energy for doing much else! It costs €14 to get in, though you do get a free pint of Guinness at the top, with some big views over Dublin, if you can take the ravening hordes up there! I think if I had just a few hours I’d save it for when I could come back for a longer visit.

If you can’t afford to live in Dublin, you could book several of these cheap flights and pop over for some lessons. Myself, I’d be camped all day at Henrietta street once a week.
