Actually, I just completed reading through the instruction book, and layed out plan of how I’m going to modify the outside of the chanter with wood instead of the PVC that comes with the kit. I’ll put it together this weekend if I can finish grouting and sealing my bathroom and putting a new power steering hose in my wife’s car.
The possibility of cracking is real. However, there are many examples of 100+ year old MacDougall highland bagpipes where brass was used to line the tuning chambers of the drones with no ill effect.
I, of course, would be using very well seasoned wood (15 year old ABW), and even if it did crack, there’s brass underneath to keep it from being much of a problem. The best part is that the process of boring the wood to fit the brass, and then turning the outside to a nice profile will only take a couple hours. Probably more time will be spent drilling the finger holes than making the skin. So even if it only last 50 years, I won’t have a lot of time or money tied up in it.
My first chanter was a Penny chanter made by myself and as in Argentina you can´t get the PVC pipe to make the outer shell (that measure doesn´t exists here) I made a wooden outer shell, placed the brass bore into it and poured polyester resin. It has four years now.. and no cracks. Got pics of it at my site, is the one that seems to be made of boxwood.
