Wolfgang-
I have both a Dixon Low D and an Overton. I am a woman with small hands and can play both. The Dixon is a good whistle, but the Overton is a great whistle. If you LOVE the sound of the low whistle, and are committed to learning it, put the money that you would use to buy a Dixon toward an Overton. The ease of play, sound, and smoothness is more than worth the extra $$. If you find that it’s not your “thing”, there would be people waiting in line to buy your Overton.
Hope this helps!
Thank you all again. Your comments helped a lot.

Colin Goldie… is the maker of Overton whistles, which, though Davy may deny it, are almost certainly the whistles Davy plays.

He. He. Heheheh. Heeeheeehee. HA! I love this post. Chris is my hero.
Of course, Chris HAS to be wrong. If Davy says he builds his own whistles, it must be
true. It must be some weird coincidence that I am the founder of the most ridiculously huge worldwide network of whistle players in the world and I’ve never heard from a soul who has ever owned a Spillane-made whistle. COINCIDENCE I TELL YOU!
Dale
I have a whole set of Spillane whistles I’m about to put up on ebay. Keep your eyes open…Tony
ebay.com, or ebay.co.uk?
Just tell me when, and I will see if I can afford them.
LOL
Wolfgang, it’s a joke. Buy an Overton.
Best,
Chris
Maybe I am, maybe, I’m not.
Tony
Uh oh…
Chris
Dang it! I was all set to make a killing on ebay, and now they seem to have disappeared. Grrr…
But, do look for a wonderful bridge I’ll be putting up for auction. It’s in Brooklyn.

Send an e-mail to instruments@davyspillane.com and ask about Davy’s low whistles… that’s always entertaining.
Be sure to specify that you’re interested in his all-aluminum Overton style whistles though, or they’ll try to sell you one with a plastic mouthpiece.
It takes a good long while to get a reply, so be sure to choose your words very carefully… trust me on this one.
Yeah, but he probably hand-carves the plastic mouthpiece. Or blows once in it, so you get the hero’s juice, not to be found in a standard Kerry…
Wolfgang, check your private messages…
Cheryl
Thanks, Cheryl. I just sent a reply.
Now I am sure going to redicule myself, but talking about plastic mouthpieces: I am not really sure, but if I remember well, the whistle Davy played when he was on stage with Bryan Adams seemed to have a black mouthpiece. Dunno wether it was plastic or not, but black sounds very much like plastic.
I have a DVD of this concert at home, but unfortunately it doesn´t work and I have to carry it back to the shop. I would have been able to give you some better info if it worked.
In the picture of the whistle on his site, there isn’t a plastic mouthpiece. It looks like, well, an Overton. Surprise, surprise.

Do they have a black mouthpiece?
Wolfie,
Play it safe and listen to what the players on this forum are saying. If you want that Riverdance-like sound, get an Overton. I’ll bet noone (no, not even Jessie ) on the board has actually played one of Spillane’s whistles. He is a performer, and a darned good one, but not a full time whistlesmith like Colin Goldie, Michael Copeland or Jim Rementer. Colin Goldie is an awesome guy, and I’ll bet Bridgette is as cute as she is polite. I have a low G from him, and I can push the thing harder than any whistle I own, my own whistles included. If it’s more edge you want, Copeland is the way to go, but they demand more air. When in doubt, buy one, then the other later…you can always sell a good whistle (as I did today, in less than 4 minutes on this board).

The reason I posted the above was to preserve record of “DSpillane’s” post, as he kept posting, then deleting as soon as anyone commented on it.
Odd, I wonder why Mr. Spillane posted and then deleted the info?
Well, thanks for saving it for us Walden, at least it’s now in the permanent record.
So, who’s going to be the first to order one of Mr. Spillane’s whistles?
Loren
I know what the deal is with all this sketchy mess:
