Daughter of APOD

Does anyone know what satellite/instrument was used to capture this image ?

The image of solar prominences featuring an image of the earth in the back ground is a composite image. If you click the image you will go to the APOD page. At the foot of the APOD page is a link to a discussion of this image.http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=33033

Bob,

Thank you for the reply.

I figured the image was a composite, just to show the scale of the structures. My real question is how the Sun was imaged.

Honestly, I’ve read the caption as closely as I can. I tried following a few links. I can’t find a reference identifying the instrument. I even went to the APOD page link you provided and tried to follow the discussion. I tried a few links there, and found this:

It’s apparently from the originator, in French. I used Google translate and I tried to follow the discussion there.

I give up. HELP !

p.s. yes, I’ve got way too much time on my hands.

It’s identified at the bottom of the photo in the link you posted: a 230 mm (~9 inch) refracting telescope with Glasspath and Barlow correcting/magnifying lenses, and a resolution of 11 seconds per pixel. In other words, an earth-based amateur telescope.

You could use that time to learn French … :stuck_out_tongue:

I had no idea such detail could be resolved using an earth-based telescope !

Thanks for the explanation !
