Cyclists Beware!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/4794198.stm

I have seen many such hazards myself.

You need your wits about you at all times

Slan,
D.

Our nearest bike lane is on the A4155 (ā€œThe Marlow Roadā€). It starts off on the pedestrian footpath, gives up after about a mile and becomes eighteen inches of blacktop with a three-inch white line separating the bikes from the cars travelling at sixty miles per hour, and then disappears abruptly at the top of a small rise, where the road narrows to two fairly narrow lanes. It resumes immediately, conveniently (!) on the other side of the road, on a suddenly-appearing footpath.

At least you can see a telephone box looming up in front of you, even if you don’t believe it. Where the cycle lane disappears, it’s next to impossible to spot. At least the first time. And there may never be a second time.

ā€œWarning! This Cycle-lane could seriously damage your health!ā€

That car door thing always scared me. We had no bike lanes when I rode regularly, so there was nothing to block. I’m not sure these lanes are much of an improvement over riding in traffic. At least I knew full well my life was in constant danger!

we don’t have bike lanes in our immediate area, so I do NOT ride in our immediate area. It’s just too dangerous.

In the area of town my mom lives in, they put these really nice brick bike lanes in. Now - this is an area that goes through a yearly freeze / thaw cycle and pavement is known for ā€œheavingā€. After the first winter, the bricks were at all sorts of angles and pushed up or dropped down. They go back periodically and have to reset the entire thing. And you sure don’t want to ride on this with racing tires!!! :astonished:

After 22 years of dodging cars, car doors, and objects thrown from cars (inlcuding fruit, eggs, bottles, and cans) occasionally accompnied by verbal abuse-and sometimes verbal abuse by itself) little about the interaction of cyclists and the motor vehicle world surprises me.

The gratifying thing about the original post is that there are bicycle lanes being built. To put it as my Dad always says,

ā€œThe remarkable thing about the dancing bear is not that he doesn’t dance well, but that he dances at all.ā€

I’ve seen pictures like that in England’s Cycling+ magazine, but never ( don’t ever say never, someone will take you up on it) here in L.A. Just cars, more cars, glass, etc. The funniest bike route sign I’ve seen is pointing to route that’s a 1 in 10. The planning department must have a sense of humor for that ride.

That’s my favorite.

When I’m healthy enough I like to ride bicycles, although I’d never call myself a ā€œcyclist;ā€ I’ve always wanted to learn to ride a unicycle.

There are no bicycle lanes where I live, we just use the sidewalk usually…

Dare to dream my friend, anything is possible. I’m envisioning it now…

Serious 'nads there.

I looked out of my 17th floor window one evening, back about ten years now, and this kid was unicycling up the road. Not a bother on the guy, just going along minding his own business.
I went down around the Town the next day hoping to see a poster or something advertising a Circus..or a Carnaval.

Nope, nothing.

To this day I wonder just what that kid was all about. Never seen or heard anything at all in these parts to suggest the presence of a Unicycle.

I’d have a go at one..anytime

Slan,
D.

Perhaps seeing a few wipeouts will dissuade you :smiling_imp: http://www.sykoproductions.com/U2trailer.mov

These are from last summer. Gabe (now 13,) and Olivia (now 15) aren’t half bad. Becca (now 17) also can do it, but is out of practice. Rachel never mastered it. I sort of sat on one of the unicycles a couple times, when we acquired them a few years back and thought, ā€œnaaaahhhh.ā€ That’s exactly what I thought.

Ok, I just watched Loren’s video.
My kids consider themselves lucky if they make a good U-turn.

Bit of a learning curve then…nothing good comes easy.

Slan,
D.

Hey, cool pics! I sense a thread hi-jack in progress…

Loren

Used unicycles are readily available on Ebay. Good prices, low mileage.

I got one a few years ago; I mean, one wheel can’t be that difficult, right? I ride a bicycle and that has two wheels, fer cryin’ out loud.
So I spent several hours over the course a summer learning to stay up for a good 30 seconds or so. I never landed on my face, which surprised me. I also discovered that while mounting a unicycle it is very easy for one foot to go down rearwards which lifts the other pedal up for a sharp whack in the shin. Every time.

I might have had a chance if I had a teacher, but none of the local cycle shops, all of which sold uni’s, knew of anyone who could actually ride the thing.

Roger

There’s a trick, or so I’m told. One has to lean forward while riding, which seems counterintuitive at first, but apparently is what works.

Hey, as long as you have a job that won’t be impacted when you bust your wrist or snap a collar bone. A buddy of mine did that on a Mountain Bike Ride we were on a few years back - landed wrong coming off a jump and shattered his collar bone - sharp edges trying to poke through the skin and all - ā€œcan you say compound fracture, sure ya can.ā€ Not a pretty sight. He missed a 8-10 weeks of work, and still has a big ole’ lump, where the bone didn’t heal properly, to show for it. Nice.

Loren

But can he ride a Uni?

Joking aside, the damage can be serious and life changing.

But the feeling..ah now..that is priceless.

Mid air, 'nads on the line..moments of sheer ecstacy..for a moment or two.

The back down to the trail..mundane.

Slan,
D.

Wow! and Ow! Never saw anything like that before!

Yeah, you’re right, that’s why I mountain bike, rock climb, and date women that I should know better than to get involved with

Okay then D., sounds like you’re a real adrenalin junkie then, so I’m thinking you should just skip that nancy boy Mountain Unicycling and go right to something like this - No ropes, no nets, and your 'nads will be 400 feet off the deck. Warning kids do NOT try this at home. Er, well, better at home than Yosemite.

Wasn’t that a Heinken advert?
