Crazy piping...

Sorry, another non expert in the uilleann piping field… but, I’m listening to The Wind That Shakes The Barley from Chieftains 8, and in the second part (if that’s correct) the tune that sounds similar or may even be a different rendition of Drowsy Maggie, Paddy does some crazy piping there… When he does his part solo, it almost sounds (to a current non piper’s ear) like he’s playing the E notes and the D notes at the same time… I know, that can’t be possible right? But, my lack of knowledge in piping leaves me curious as to how and what the hell he is doing… lol besides some pretty aweseome piping of course. Sounds awesome as hell though.

Well, maybe not the E and the D notes at the same time… Errr… Hard to explain… It almost sounds like when he’s doing the ‘jumps’, he’s also playing E notes at the same time… Sounds really awesome, but. it’s confusing to me as to what he’s doing. This probably doesn’t help much but oh well.

I think the tune played with Wind That Shakes The Barley is called The Reel With the Beryl. And I think a lot of folks have mistaken it for Drowsie Maggie. WTSTB and Drowsie Maggie have been played together for years around here.

Oh I know the tunes that are played, I was just referring to the track as you see it listed on the cd so as to know which tune I was asking about. I was really wondering how Paddy was doing that “crazy piping” as I called it. Just sounded so cool to me.
