Hi, I am new to Irish Flutes (but have played a Boehm flute for 36 years).
Would like to get a complete fingering chart to use with my Casey Burns Folk Flute I just ordered. Saw the one at www.mcgee-flutes.com/keyless but it only has the fingerings for notes of the G or D major scale.
Does anyone know where I could find one with all of the chromatic notes e.g. F natural, Ab, Eb etc? Or do Irish Flutes don’t play in those keys?
Irish flutes are like tin whistles, you need to cross finger or half hole notes like Fnat, Bb, Cnat, G# and try to half hole D#.
The burns folk flute from what I’ve heard does better with cross fingering of notes unless you have small fingers. You’ll have to try various fingerings/half hole techniques for your flute…here are some that might work:
It can take some time figuring out the charts above (especially the last one which if I recall correctly seems intuitively backwards).
You should with much practice, rolling the flute in or out, decreasing or increasing breath flow, etc. eventually get most of the accidentals (as far as the irish flute is concerned at least) OK except for probably D# which always sounds pretty bad.
