comparison of materials for rings\keys\ferrules etc...

Hello,

I was wondering if there are any advantages of using sterling-silver for rings\keys\ferrules etc… rather than cheaper materials like nickel-silver,brass,imitation ivory?

any information would be much appreciated! thanks

I guess it begs the question “advantages to whom”! So let’s address it in those terms.

For the maker, it could be a personal decision. I love working silver. It’s not that much dearer than brass or nickel silver, but much nicer to work and more satisfying in the outcome.

For the owner, easier upkeep than brass or nickel silver (which is really a brass and not a silver). A weekly wipe-over with a silver cloth (available from jewellers or music shops) will keep real silver sparkling. Handy to find your flute when it rolls off the table in the gloom of the pub.

And a lot sturdier than real ivory or artificial ivory.

What, you’re not using Argentinium Silver yet Terry?!? Shame on you, not keeping up with the Joneses.
