Well, after about 10 months of whistling, I think I’m ready to buy my first high-end whistle. I’m looking for something in tune with itself (most important), easy to play through both octaves without having to “push” the notes out, and with a pure, sweet tone with no breathiness. If it helps any, my favorite cheap whistle is my Oak D.
I’m leaning towards either a Burke brass pro session or an Elfsong brass. Judging by all the reviews I’ve read, they both seem to be well-loved by the people who have them. I was wondering, is there anyone who has BOTH of these whistles and could clue me in on the differences in sound and playability?
I’ve played and owned both. Both are good whistles, but the Burke is much less breathy. It also plays incredibly well throughout the range (in tune, consistent and easy). It has a pure, creamy sound, flute-like in many ways. The Elfsong has a nice “elfin” quality about it, possibly with a bit more character than the Burke. The Elfsong D I had demanded a lot of pressure in the high range to speak clearly, and I’m a flute-player, with a lot of hot air to spare. I liked the tonal quality, but I couldn’t get past the breathiness. I prefer a pure sound. I’ve stayed with my Burke
i’ve owned and played both and agree the burke is purer sounding. the elfs win for beauty, but my experience would steer you to the burke. you can’t go wrong with either one. enjoy the music.
