Does anyone know a source for colored acetal rod… besides just the common black and white?
My extensive web searching has only turned up colored PVC and acrylic rods, and I’m quite surprised that I can’t also find colored acetal rods… even nylon seems to only be available in black and white.
I’d really like to offer a choice of colors for my mouthpieces, and PVC would serve that purpose even though acetal would be preferable.
Acrylic isn’t an option since it doesn’t machine very well… which is a pity, because translucent or clear mouthpieces would look really cool.
I’m very reluctant to work with PVC again since switching to acetal, so I suppose the idea of colored mouthpieces will just have to be forgotten if that’s the only available choice of materials.
As common and popular as acetal has become, surely there are more choices of colors available somewhere… does anyone know where?
Not sure what material it is, but I’ve been to a couple of Woodcraft stores where they had plastic turning supplies. Might want to check www.woodcraft.com and see if they’ve got anything of use on the site or any stores near you.
I thought I saw some blue nylon in the usplastics.com catalog.
There is another stuff, PEEK that has an orange color.
Now, PVC can be lightly colored by soaking it in a solution of acetone and Rit clothing dye for about 10 minutes. (In a well ventilated area)
CPVC will pick up a little color this way but much less than PVC does.
It should probably be sealed with a clear afterwards - but it make a finish that won’t leave white scratches easily.
You’re in luck… I do know where you can get it… But uh… Whats in it for me??? Ok just kidding. Hold on let me check my sources… I’ll have my people’s people call your people’s people so they can do lunch
Is this what you were looking for? http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=148&
Oops I guess you don’t want acrylic… my bad I saw acetal around somewhere…
Shoot my other source only had black and natural sorry… https://wpb1.webproductionsinc.com/asapsource/secure/store/wpbec_dynamicIndex.asp
Would this get you closer to what you need? Acetal copolymer comes in several colors, but the page also states that the Delrin branded stuff (acetal homopolymer) is only in black and natural. A search for acetal copolymer should work a lot better than for something like color Delrin.

Their web site is a bit weird to navigate if you actually want to see tube sizes or order pages, but it includes a 1-800 number to call. I found their web site at this whistle-making site:

That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for, John… thanks!
I’ve been using Acetron GP acetal instead of Delrin, so I’m certain that this colored acetal copolymer will work just fine.
I’ll do a little more refined web searching now that I know exactly what I’m looking for, and I’ll call Boedeker Plastics if I can’t find a source closer to Tennessee.
So Raindog…, watcha gonna do with this stuff??? Looks like it would make good fipple material Huh? Huh???
Methinks Justin hasn’t been paying attention!
Well I suppose I thought you say something about mouthpieces… Hmmm I did ingest a bit of the Hops & Barley today… Wait… this isn’t the Quadfourums… opps…
