Forgive my ignorance, but is there a trick to doing Cnat-B-Cnat smoothly and quickly, so it doesn’t sound like you’re doing some weird cut? It’s hard for me to get this one. On some tunes it seems you can cheat by doing C#'s and it’s not noticeable, but on other tunes that doesn’t work, at least to my ear. I’ve tried half-holing, and it comes off sounding like a slide. This is keeping me from playing certain tunes that otherwise I’d do okay with.
I half hole C-nat almost always for that move. If a slide sounds good then I go for it but try not to make it sound like I’m drunk. Often I’m looking for a slightly sharp C-nat so precise intonation isn’t a major issue. Where I want to make that move without articulation or sliding of any kind I’d simply stop breathing while moving my fingers rather than cross finger or tongue and just practice to get the intonation right on whatever whistle I’m using. I’d like to know if someone has a better way of doing it.
Hi Lyrick, you can half hole if you want to, but it is possible to get the change from cross-fingered C nat to B smooth and glicthless, but it takes a lot of practice, doing the change very slowly many times. This will work but it will take time.
I use the oxxxox for C nat so there are a lot of fingers that have to move together.
I think one of the problems with this change is that you go through a point were no fingers are on the Whistle, and I think we avoid this subconsciously to prevent the Whistle from slipping.
Good luck

You can do oxxooo to oxxxxo. Depending on the whistle, it may be more or less passable. On a thick walled instrument, it may get you by but it’s not gonna be in tune too well. On a thin walled one, a tube, it will be worse, but may get you by on a fast passage. It’s not gonna sound great unless you flip around and finger it right though. But it will get you by in some situations.
Half-holing combined with tonguing should do the trick.
C nat can be done at speed using OXO-OOO. The note will be sharp, but when the notes are packed in tight it’s not noticeable. Another trick: practice a lot.
Tom.
Never tried the OXO-OOO fingering for the C natural, may have to try that on a couple of the songs I’m working on. Okay, sorry, pondering out loud. Anyways, so far the best way to finger the note that I’ve come up with is half-holing. It involves the least amount of finger movement to give speed (unless you are like me and have a tendancy to mess up half-holing) ![]()
It’s the same way you get to Carnegie Hall.
Practice, practice and more practice.
Play the Wrongs of Women
err… Rights of Man a lot, or the old chestnut, Irish Washerwoman.
Those two taught me how to do it.
I use these fingerings.
OXX OOX
XOO OOX
For Cnatural - besides oxxooo, oxxoxx, I also use oxoooo, oxoxxx & oxoxxo, depending on how fast I’m playing, what notes precede and follow it, and what tone/color I’m looking for. Also depends alot on the particular whistle I’m playing. For the B-Cnat-B, I typically use oxxooo, oxoooo, or oxoxxo.
Of course, you can always avoid it completely by playing variations.
Listen to all the neat stuff Patsy Touhey will play on the pipes to get around those notes.
You do listen to pipe recordings as well as whistle, don’t you???
Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions, this is a big help. (I figured more than one person would say it was just a matter of practice, but I was at the point of not being sure what I should even practice.)
