Hi, I’ve posted here a few times this week. As I said in my other posts, I’m a flute player who wants to start playing the Uilleann Pipes. I’m trying to figure out who to buy a practice (or 1/2) set from. I’ve been talking with Chris Bayley via email, and I have to say he’s been fantastic, he’s a really helpful guy. Chris has invited me over to try his pipes which I will probably try to do, but he is a long way from me so that will take some thinking about (no car most of the time). I was wondering if anyone has any comments on his pipes? Feel free to PM me.
I don’t have any personal experience with Chris Bayley’s pipes. That said, make the trip to check them out! I’m not saying this to cast any doubt about this maker’s stuff but Pipes are a whole other kettle of fish from flute. I’m sure you are already aware of the cost. Plus there are sooo many different technical, tweaky kind of things that go on just to play them correctly, much more than that to keep them properly maintained. Getting specific info straight from the maker is going to go a long way in you being comfortable with the purchase. It is quite a commitment on your part. Figure out the transportation and make a day of it. You won’t regret it.
