I’m a begining player, I’ve been learning Native American Flute for about the past 10 months and recently started to learn the whistle. I have a Walton’s D that I don’t much care for and just ordered a tweaked Sweetone D. I’m looking down the road at future whistles. I’m thinking about getting a set of GFM whistles in D and C and a Dixon whistle in A.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks for the help. ![]()
I didn’t like my Walton either until I bought a Hoover whitecap for it. Now it is one of my favorites. It might be helpful if you describe what kind of sound you are looking for, and what style of music you see yourself playing, if you need volume for outdoor playing or if that is a non-issue.
I don’t think you can wrong with a Sweetone. The others, I don’t own. A lot of folks like Burkes (though I don’t). I like my Susato (many don’t care for them).
Alternately I’m thinking of just getting all three keys in Dixon whistles. ![]()
I’m looking for a mellow, softer, more flute-like sound. I live in an apartment so volume is an issue.

I would’ve recommended the Waltons Mellow D / Feadog C set that he usually has on there but I don’t see one right now. Either way, I know you don’t like your Waltons whistle but this will blow your mind. It has a very soft, warm tone and is very quiet. I bought one on a whim just out of curiosity and was very surprised and satisfied. The price is quite cheap for such a wonderfully tweaked whistle.

Okay, I found the other one I was talking about. I would HIGHLY recommend this, you can’t lose with that price.
I’ll second that, big time.
Hoover comes to mind, as does O’Brien.
Also Alba Q1.
Burke, depending on your price range.

Thanks, I will certainly check that out.
The Dixon is a good idea. I love my GFM D, but it may be a bit too powerful for some apartments. Alba Q1s, Hoovers, and Burkes are all nice also.
Well Straycat 82, I liked your recommendation of the Mellowdog enough to buy one on e-bay. I’ve taken up the uilleann pipes recently and have heard that whistles make for good practice. I was reluctant to pay $150. or so for a good instrument and didn’t want to buy a toy either. This sounds like it should fit the bill. Thanks again.
I also live in a very small apartment. When home, I blow on a Clark original or my susato low D. You may want to check out the clark original. It’s not in tune, though. But who cares if you’re just practicing by yourself in your apartment.
Be warned…The Clark Original is probably the ugliest whistle I’ve ever seen. However, you can find them without the ugly black and gold diamonds or in a natural metallic finish. They take some getting used to and are really not a terrific whistle, but once you get into the zone with it, you can really get a nice classic sound.
