I just posted one of those rare Czech Elder wood whistles in F, and a matched pair of Kung Blackwood recorders. Take a peek. Thanks.
I just competed a Low D in Elderberry for my personal use and what a sweet tone it has. Very mellow!!! Lots of Elderberry bushes here in So. Oregon.

Any chance of posting a photo or two of your whistle? If/when you get a chance.
Sure I’ll take a shot and if I can figure how to put it up I’ll do it.

Here’s a couple of pics of the elderberry Low D I just made for myself. Challenging to make so I won’t be selling these.

Nice work Ronaldo!!
Very pretty! What makes these more challenging than whistles made from other materials?
Love wood… thank you Ronaldo for posting photos.

Brent, the difficulty is that that when the soft pithy center of the elderberry is removed it leaves an uneven bore as compared to an extruded brass tube which is smooth and even. So when drilling the holes it’s easy to get them out of position due to the erratic bore. I had to plug the 6th hole and move it up 3/8" and most of the other holes are radically undercut.
Also creating the ramp edge was touchy due to the softness of the wood and I had to strengthen it with a piece of brass. So for a one off it’s doable with a lot of patience but not feasible for larger production. The piece of elderberry I used was extra soft as it was dead and dry when I found it but one cut green is much harder when dried and would have been easier to work with.
I’m happy I put in the time to make it as I like the tone and it’s fairly loud.

Ronaldo - It sounds like your project was akin to making a whistle out of styrofoam!
Thank you for the information and the pictures.
Ronaldo-- have you tried cyanoacrylate glue to stabilize or harden the blade on softer woods? I use this on “soft” woods like Maple, or woods where the grain tends to raise with moisture and it works very well. I coat the blade inside and out.
Paul, yes I have used the superglue a lot on soft woods to harden it up. 25 years ago I started out making Native courting flutes from redwood and cedar and used the glue to harden the fipple area as well as the entire flute. I did put some on the elderberry fipple which was helpful and plan to put a water based sealer on the entire whistle which will give more protection and give it a satin finish.
