Some fishing cases on ebay.
Yes but look at the size of them. Not of much use at all at all.

Wondering if anyone has ever used or seen one of these:

I use this case for one of my full sets. While I like the case (good size, lots of handy pockets, no problem on airplanes, etc.) I have been disappointed that over the year or so I have had it the seams have started to fray and come apart, particularly those that bear the weight of the pipes when carrying them on your sholuder. I don’t consider myself particularly hard on the case, so not sure if it’s a design problem or whether I have been unlucky.
It was good while it lasted, but I fear it doesn’t have much life left in it.
Aye, Fergmaun, that’s the one.
I couldn’t find any outside the US, either. My lovely parents in Colorado had to send it to me.
I wonder if you could convince these people to make a simple case. Check out the vid!
impressive. thanks for that link! ![]()
I talked to the guy at Hoffee cases. Apparently, the first one is very expensive because they have to make a mold. After that, they’re only about a thousand bucks apiece.
perhaps a few guys could get together and agree on a design and split the cost… OR… if Mr. Hoffee could get convinced that there’d be an Uilleann market … as small as it may be…?
The first case of a new shape is about $15k. Not likely.
I ordered a case from this guy -

Glenn’s trombone cases have a rigid, padded inner sleeve for the trombone slide which works great for keeping the chanter isolated from the rest of the set.
I don’t like to take my pipes apart much, and I like having a long enough case for the straight bass reg. The leather gig bag is great for around town, but for flying or shipping, it’s not very protective, so I ordered a piece of stuff like this that goes inside the case for traveling -
There are a bunch of people making carbon fiber tubing these days, any shape, size, and thickness. It’s about 20 thousandths per layer of CF. I ordered five layers, 1/10th of an inch thick. Three would be plenty.
When I get where I’m going, I can leave the tube out of the case, but I still have a heavy duty leather gig bag. And having the tube inside the gig bag means I didn’t have to mount a handle and stuff on the tube. It is incredibly strong.
Here is the Chinese version of Glenn Cronkhite’s generic trombone bag. Not bad for 115 bucks, but the cordura is a pet hair magnet.
Just to bring my part in this all to a conclusion: a Berwall SW 070 XL fell in the door here two days ago. it is actually quite similar to the case I have been using for the C set for the past 26 years. The full set fits in there easily (it’s in the new case while I am replacing the foam interior of the old case) so it there will be ample space for the 3/4 set that is due within a fortnight, with room for some extra bits. There may have been even lighter/stronger etc cases, at a price, but as it is this will do me nicely and, along with the pipes, it’s likely to outlast me anyway.
Mr Gumby , do you still have a conctact number for that company that sells the basson tube/case ?? Also Andy M, did you get stung by customs for the chinese viola case ?
cheers
Mei
Something similar to the case I use. I got mine deliver for £60…can’t remember the website…mine would hold a fullset no problem not sure about this one tho.

I’ve got a case from Consort which is brill for one of my sets bit’s a real squeeze for two. I think the gun case is a wee bit to small but thanks anyway
I recently replaced my venerable protec viola case with a newer model. C’est parfait! It has a smooth, pet-hair-confounding surface, a top handle in addition to the usual ones, a little interior compartment for all of one’s oddments, backpack straps plus room for a full set and a 3/4 set (sans bellows). $129 (bp straps extra).
The only thing I had to do to it was remove the bow clips on the inside lid.

TK, where did you get the newer model Protec viola case? Is there a link to it online?
My first uilleann pipes case I got from Robbie Hughes in 1996
Size 85cm x 20cm x 24mm, looks similar to Marc van Daal cases

My second case I got from Cillian O’Briain workshop in Dingle Co Kerry 1999.
Made by Savage and Hoy in England size 31" x 11" x 5" (large case)
Cillian had another Savage and Hoy smaller case 25" x 9" x 5.5" (Nollaig MacCárthaigh uses this case for this C# Joe Kennedy pipes.
My third case I got from Savage and Hoy in England
Size case is 33” x 13.5” x 6”

And my last case I have now I got from Andreas Rogge
Size 84cm x 27.5cm x 12cm

Cheers

Another vote for the Protec viola case. I’ve use one for three years with no problems. It (currently) fits within the carry-on baggage dimensions for the airlines I’ve flown.
I’ve also heard of violinists citing a viola case as additional protection against theft as no one would knowingly want to steal a viola ![]()
I picked it up at Quinn Violins in Minneapolis. This is the model.
Thanks! That’s what I was after. Perfect.
