Cases, again

If you go that route, my advice would be to get the viola one. In my experience fiddle cases were just barely deep enough and that varied.

Well, I try. In my pro-tec viola case I can fit the following:
-A full D set (wrap around bass reg bar)
-3/4 B set
-Whistles
-Thread, wax
-Piping excuses
-Late-for-gig alibis

And yes, all of that is heavy. But I do have the strength of 5 men.

Bellows goes in my backpack with my socks and unmentionables.

I have seen these cases with a smooth finish. Mine is the default rough kind which stubbornly displays a who’s-who of all the furry animals I have owned.

I have mentioned the strongly-held (but not measured by science) belief that these types of cases give one that classical-musician (maybe even famous!) caché when boarding planes. Coupled with a suite coat, gloves and a scarf (no matter how hot the weather) and you are past the boarding agent and in your seat before you can say D’imighnai Croistmas!

There are a few places in Ireland I looked at Ray Doherty

does ready made cases for the warpipes :

as well as custom cases, Dublin Flight Case co do decent stuff as well. looked at loads in the UK as well.

I went with the Berwall in the end though. Derrick Gleeson uses those and he’s happy with them. Price is right too. I went for the SW 070 XL, they need a bit of extra foam I think and the 60, while hassle free for walking on board an airplane, would leave no play at all for the bass drone. So that’s sorted.

Thanks all for the input.

The man himself is doing the last two reg keys today, only the bellows and reeds to go.

Martin Hayes was in town for the weekend, he has a shiny case. He also said he always books a seat for the fiddle, especially on Ryan air. Ofcourse he does. It’s his living.

Somehow I thought you were getting an antique set. So you’re getting a new one? Venturing into shrill territory!

Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeekk!

Now that’s an area of piping I’m expert in!

Juan Pablo Plata has once of the www.berwall.de case which came with this Andreas Rogge B full set in https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/copeland-whistle/1944/1

Are these the cases Andreas Rogge uses now and these cases look very similar to my A. Rogge case.

“Bellows goes in my backpack with my socks and unmentionables.” Tommy Kleen.
Unmentionables!! It’s ok to say it, I assume you mean your Madonna CD’s.

My violin case, 2nd hand when I got it some years ago is falling apart so thanks everyone for the tips. I think I’ll go for a viola case next time if a bellows will fit in.

Just now, in a PM, I was offered a bassoon case/tube for £30 plus £10 postage. 70cm length, 20 cm diameter. Looks nice enough, although you probably don’t want anyone to sit on them. But it would suit me carrying the 3/4 set around playing locally. Seller says they have 80 in stock so if anyone is interested …
They’re in the UK.

Hi Mr G,

Why not contact Henrietta Street? NPU sells a consort case, mid size is 68x24x17 which fits my concert pitch full set with plenty of extra room for rubbish, and the price is quite reasonable. It’s very light, the lightest thing you’re likely to find outside of a BAM carbon-fiber case, and sturdy. (BAM carbon fiber cases are great, but pricey!). Consort also does a smaller case which is generally used for practice sets but which may fit your 3/4 set with drone slides removed, it may be worth checking with NPU.

I like the consort cases better than the Berwall, they seem sturdier and better wearing (IMO).

Say hi to the maestro for me, will you?

I actually looked at the NPU shop site before all this. I didn’t see any cases listed.

For consort cases.

How about a piece of 8" carbon fiber telescope tube? Easily the strongest shape and material available, and would weigh about 3 or 4 lbs.

Wondering if anyone has ever used or seen one of these:

That’s the one I had in mind when starting off on this thread, they’re fine for size (for my purposes anyway, not if you have a long bass reg bar you can’t take off) but they’re not a hard case so you have to weigh up the ease of light weight against the lesser protection. You will get them well below the price the website you linked is quoting though, if you shop around.

yeah i have one. just trust me, its not for the UP. :frowning:
truth be told, I wasnt crazy about it for the highland pipe either: odd, 'cos thats what its designed for…in fact right now it is sitting quite empty.

I love my Fishpond case, although I don’t know how Peter would go about finding one in Ireland. It’s brilliant and while it currently only carries a half-set and a whistle, I don’t think it would be a problem fitting a 3/4 set in there.

The first case I ever had was one of those huge gun-type cases and it was heavy and awkward. I wanted something lighter so I tried a Bagpiper case. Unfortunately, I had to dismantle the bass drone entirely, including taking the reed out, as otherwise it was just too long. I couldn’t be arsed reassembling the entire drone every time I wanted to play and I thought that was a pretty good way to lose or destroy the reed (which I did anyway but not as a result of keeping it in that case). That said, not all drones are equal in length. I used to have a set of drones by Eugene Lambe and they fit in that case no bother, whereas my current drones, a Hunter set…not a chance.

The Fishpond case solved all my problems.

Is this the case you are talking about.

I remembered you mentioning it and I did look for it but without any luck outside the US.
