Care of cotton tenons

A couple of thoughts:

Burt’s bees lip balm works well for me. pretty cheap at most whole foods type grocers.

Some maker, possibly Casey Burns, recomends red ski wax. This is for cross country skiing folks, so if you get snow, you might find it. I tried it for a while, and at room temperature at least, it’s just too sticky and gooey for me.

If you want to make your own goo, I’ve been told 1:1 by weight mixture of beeswax and almond oil melted together and then poured into something convenient like one of the tiny altoids tins is good for your tenons and your lips. Add a little mint scent and you probably have Burts Bees lip balm. Maybe. I’ve never tried this.

I’ve heard talk of linen thread as a good thing for tenons. Maybe it was Clive Catteral (probably butchering his name). It’s used by double reed players when they make their own reeds. There’s a bassoon shop in Berkeley that google could probably locate for you. Here it is:
