I think what is especially remarkable about the community that has grown up around here is not just that it introduces so many to the whistle, flute and pipes, but it also makes people realize that even they have the potential to build instruments, and become a craftsman.
They may start off simple with plastic tubing and a hand drill, but soon they are doing woodwork and metalwork and maybe even producing keyed instruments. I don’t know of any venturing into mainstream band instruments like boehm clarinets, but… wow!
Yes mate…I’ll second that…
I’ve been having a great time of late making Flutes from the orange coloured PVC tube that electricians use here in Australia…You start with your piece of blank tube and suddenly two hours have passed and you have something in your hands that you can play tunes on…great stuff..
I have wood and metal lathes so maybe one day I’ll have a crack at making a wooden flute…and if I have troubles…then I’m sure that some one here would only be too happy to help out…
Like you say Mr Walden..I’m impressed…
regards from Oz…weedie…
I said something remarkably like that, on one of my more arrogant days as a young stupid human… … I’m sure I provided knee slapping entertainment 'round the campfires for years afterward…
I saw some random whistle video on Youtube as I was idling around looking for song ideas for my upstart little irish pub band and started to do some research.
I found two things immediately, this place and the wandering whistler.
Seeing the wealth of knowledge in both locations, fairely friendly community, and did I mention the wealth of knowledge… I went out and picked up a little acorn whistle (obviously I didn’t do MUCH with that wealth of knowledge )
I read a bit more, picked up a faedog, and now I’m looking towards picking up a flute, making my own whistles and buying a couple nice mid range items.
If I had a resource and community like this when I started guitar or saxophone I’d be 1000x the player I am today (and I’m not that shabby as is ). This site has become a place I come to read multiple times a day.
Thus it is!! C&F is a great forum has learned so much and has known as much pleasant people in each post. It is really incredible.
In Chile Irish music is null for obvious reasons, so my only option and bridge that unites to the Irish Trad Music are this forum and other so many webs of aid that all we know.
In addition people how: MtGuru, Doc Jones, Guido and others, have helped me too much!!!, to buying whistle, make whistles or to giving valuable councils for me one better technique.
I’ll go along with all the good stuff people have already commented on. I have made friends literally all over the world thanks to Chiff and Fipple and my whistle making enterprise would be totally impossible without such a forum. Dale, you da MAN!

Yes indeed, C&F really is something else. When I started playing the whistle several years ago, C&F really pointed me into various most interesting directions, I never would have noticed without it.
And through it I got to know some really beautiful people, be it fellow whistlers, be it great whistle makers (hi Paul!), be it amiable loonies of all kinds.
So once again my thanks to Dale for this silly and great thing, he started years ago - and it’s still going strong, and thanks to evereybody else, who made and makes C&F such a fun place sometimes!
It’s hard to believe I got by for as long as I did without C&F. This website is truly the highlight of my day. Such a warm, welcoming community, I’m glad I’m finally a part of it.
