Burke Al Pro A - where does it 'break' for tuning?

I have a pro A, and for the first time in the weeks I’ve had it, I tried to tune it to someone else. To my distress, it didn’t break where I thought it would, and where it did ‘break’ didn’t make me comfortable.

To anyone who has this instrument, exactly at what point do you do the tuning? I’ll write Mike, but if I can get a quick answer here that would do me just as well.

Thx

This is not so good.
You see the bulbous area below the head? The body of the whistle slides in and out of that bulb from below. It should slide very easily. (Gosh, this sounds a little risque doesn’t it?!)
Good luck.
Chris

It’s the head of the new style Burke aluminum and brass whistles that slides in and out of the tuning sleeve, not the body like most other whistles.
It does look a bit strange the first time you move it, and I can see where someone might think they had broken it.
Be sure to lubricate it frequently and move it occasionally even if it doesn’t need tuning… they have a tendancy to sieze up rather quickly when not used regularly.

Hi everyone. I’m new to the board; new to whistles.

RainDog-- Thanks for the tip. I’m expecting a Burke Pro D any day now and this info will help me stay ahead of this.

Raindog, it is frozen, and worse than that, when I got insistent it ‘broke’ at the lowest joint where you’re not supposed to open it up, and one edge got dinged/bent in getting it back together.

It sounds okay, so I guess it isn’t truly damaged. I’ll just use it solo and resort to the Susato if I must tune an A to a group.

No, I’m not happy, but it isn’t thoroughly ruined, so I’m just going to drop the issue.

I wouldn’t drop it - I’d contact Mike. When I got my high D al pro (not directly from Mike, so who knows how long it might have been sitting around, the tuning slide was stuck. Luckily, I managed to get it unstuck, and one I did, it moved (and has continued to move) smoothly. I don’t know if the o-rings stick with disuse or what, but it certainly seems like something the builder could address.

Good luck

Tim

Tim, working with Mike Burke is always a pleasure. He happened to read the board and contacted me directly. Talk about service!
