brass vs. aluminum?

Hi everybody!

I am thinking about getting a Burke narrow bore (cuz someone said they are a bit more on the quiet side as opposed to the other Burke kind - the name of which I just can’t remember right now).
Anyway, I prefer the look of the aluminum, however, as I read in some other threads there seems to be a difference in sound between the aluminum and brass. Is that really the case?

I did download some tracks by different burke whistles but I’m not really sure whether the difference I’m hearing lies in the material and not the way of playing.

So, is there any difference in sound and if so, what is it?

Thanks alot!

:::Holding my head low::: Now I’ve never played a Burke. But all in all, I prefer brass whistles. They have nice, warm sounds compared to aluminum, which tends to be loud and strong. Only problem with brass, I find myself cleaning a brass whistle constantly. Go with BRASS

I have a Burke AlPro D (session bore) and a narrow bore Burke brass D.

There is a difference in sound, the aluminum is a bit brighter, the brass a bit more focused. Both are quite pure, being Burkes.

I used to have an Aluminum Session (wider bore). I chose aluminum for the same reason and I regretted that choice after playing a Brass one.

I have an Al-pro D (same bore size as the black tip) and an aluminum Low D Viper, as well as brass black tip (exposed delrin fipples, session models) D, C, and Bflat Burkes.

The Al-pro D is a wonderful whistle, but I prefer the brass; I am unsure whether the tubing materials play any significant role, but there are a few things to consider.

  • The Al-pro is physically very much lighter - ethereal even - than the brass.

  • The black tip has a darker tone, esp in the low end.

Both are well balanced, in tune, focused and really easy players.

A matter of preference, I prefer the brass, but you probably can’t go far wrong here.

I have probably owned and traded more brass than many on the forum. I play nothing but Chieftain Brass and I prefer it over aluminum because of its depthness and the tone which in my opinion is more pure than aluminum.

This is only my opinion. I would you suggest you get your hands on both a brass and aluminum, play them both and then decide.

Best of luck on your decision.

I worked in an aluminum extrusion plant for 16 years until they shut the place down. If I had been playing whistles at the time I could have gotten a lot of tubing at cost. I personally can’t stand aluminum. :imp:

That said, the one I’ve played seemed harder to keep warmed up, although it sounded OK. Brass is what I like. It doesn’t taste good but it is an acquired taste…
