Bodhrán player looking for people to jam with in London!

Hi there!

Okay, this is my first time posting in a forum, so please be nice! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I have just moved to London from Nottingham and I thought, surely there has to be a few people (fiddlers, singers, flautists, etc) who would like to play some Irish music and possibly go entertaining in one of London’s many Irish bars? I hope that there are a few people on here, or someone who could direct me to the right people/websites/pubs.

I am a young Dub studying music. I play the bodhrán. And I am female. (Is that poststructuralist enough for this forum?!) Although the bodhrán is not my first instrument, it is most definitely my favourite. Looking to play some tunes with melodic instruments. Anyhooooooo, I am rambling and boring potential friends/jam partners to tears! I’d be grateful of any help and/or interest!

Cheers,
Gráinne.

Welcome. I’ve driven through London, West Virginia (located in Kanawha County). I must have missed the “many Irish bars”. Unless you want to hang out at an abandoned coal tipple or down by the river, best you set your sights on safer places.

Ha. Okay, I’m fortunately talking about London, England. Guessing this is a stateside forum only?

Cheers.

No. Not in the least. There are plenty of UK-based people here. And quite a few in London, so you should get some response at some point. I would suggest you put something in the ITM florum hereabouts, as the pub tends to be frequented by shady characters, people from borders country ( ) and general ne’er-do-wells and layabouts. It’s where I seem to spend a lot of my time.

Anyway, try the ITM forum, and you’ll likely get a music-related response.

Welcome to the forums, btw. Check out the other bits of the site here. There’s plenty of activity, on both sides of the Atlantic and elsewhere. Growing French and Italian constituencies, for instance.

I’m out in the Home Counties (Not that far from Ben, in fact) so I’m no direct use to you. If you were up to hopping on a train there’s that pub in Slough. But there’s the Irish Centre in Hammersmith, that’s bound to have some action, or know where you could find some.
If the worst came to the worst, look on http://www.thesession.org which lists names and places. Be gentle with it. The information goes out of date very quickly.
You carry a noble name, Grainne! I hope you live up to your namesake!

Great. Thanks for all the help. I have posted in ITM but no responses over the last few days! Oh well. I will hold out in hope of a good response!

In the mean time, I’m going to take a trip to the Irish Centre in Hammersmith!

Thank you, all.

Gráinne.

Yes, that is probably a good place to start.

Actually, there were: 17 to be exact. Yes, some silly fluff. But also a serious request (from me) for more background information about yourself in order to better advise you.

You see, your language of “peeps” and “jams” and “gigs” and “liberal” does give the impression that you may be new to your instrument and unfamiliar with the Irish traditional music scene and sessions. If that’s completely wrong, only you can tell us. Which may get you better answers than the speculation which your puzzling request has caused. But not replying at all to the people who bothered to comment in the ITM forum is a bit off-putting, whether you like the responses there or not, and leaves everyone in the dark.

So maybe give that a try …
