Blues, blue grass, on the Irish flute?

I’m getting good enough now
to play flute a bit with my pals.
Well, blues don’t works so well,
nor does blue grass. The flute
lacks the metallic edge of
my Copeland whistles.

It occurs to me that this may
improve as my embouchure
improves. I remember Jethro Tull.
Or is it that a wooden flute
just isn’t meant for
that sort of thing?

What music does one play,
other than Irish trad?

I once put together a set that I called “The Moon and the Star.” It started with Van Morrison’s “Moondance” and then segued gradually into the reel, “The Star of Munster.” They’re remarkably similar tunes. Also if you want to hear some amazing jazzy stuff on the wooden (and bamboo) flute and whistle, listen to Flook’s latest recording, Rubai, with Brian Finnegan on flute.

Van Morrison is the most famous Irish Rocker out there and he does like the traditional as well.

Personally, I play anything I like and that doesn’t have too many sharps or flats since I’m keyless.

Currently I’m playing a lot of Bach, some Beethoven, and a wee bit of Mozart. I play along with pop songs on the radio sometimes, too, to work on my ear, but I need serious work in this area!

Yes, me too. Bach and so on.

I mean there’s very little blues
harp. Irish harp doesn’t cut it when
it comes to that–or to bluegrass…
Blues on a recorder isn’t gonna
do it–not with other instruments,
youknow. But blues whistle is
swell, and so is bluegrass whistle.

Well, is a blackwood Irish flute
more like a harp–when it comes
to blues, bluegrass, and rock?

Brad,

“Moondance” is a real favorite of mine. Any chance we could get you to post an ABC or any other helps for those of us who would like to give it a go?

Sorry, I really don’t know how to write music (I can figure out the notes but I’ve never understood timing, measures, etc. etc.). I’m sure there’s sheet music available somewhere. I play it in a-minor so it’s the same key as The Star of Munster, and starts out the same way: ABCBA. If you have the tune in your head, you should be able to easily figure out the rest from there. There’s an F natural that you’ll have to play, but everything else is straightforward.
