I’m listening to the Star of Munster trio. Does anyone know if Billy Clifford ever made a solo flute recording, or did he only record with his mom?
He has about 1/2 the solo tracks on “Irish Traditional Flute Solos And Band Music From Kerry And Tipperary” ( http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/1286 ). And he recorded a number of tracks in 2003 especially for Wooden Flute Obsession vol. 2, with his choice appearing on the CD.

He’s still around? I don’t know why I’m surprised, but I suppose I shouldn’t be. I have WFE somewhere; I’ll go and dig it up. Thanks!
When I last spoke to him, he was playing out plenty of nights of the week. He plays a wooden Radcliff and a wooden Boehm. He recorded a number of takes of different sets at the studio Booby Gardnier recommended (Studio Fiona in Fermoy) at studio session on both systems. There was more noise from the Radcliff mechanism (probably out of adjustment), and ultimately we chose the Boehm take on those hornpipes.
His son, Denis, said Billy enjoyed recording again (after about a 20 year hiatus) and had urged him to work on a new commercial recording.

Oh, was Julia his mom? I always thought he was her husband.
If I have it correctly, Julia Clifford aka Julia the Weaver was his mother, and her brother Denis Murphy was his uncle. Box player John Clifford was Julia’s husband & Billy’s father. Julia and Denis were fiddle students of Padraig O’Keefe.
Well, I’m glad I found that out before I embarassed myself somewhere. ![]()
