I am looking to buy an alto G whistle. My current favourite whistle is an Impempe Bb and I would purchase an Impempe G, but they are unavailable and unlikely to be made in the future. What I like about the Impempe is that you can really ‘lean into it’ it is perfectly in tune and quite pure sounding.
The only Gs I can see available here in the UK are Dixon and Alba.
Does anyone have any other experience / recommendations? Price up to £100
My own line of thinking about this ended up with the fact that the G is only a note and a half lower than the Bb and if one has a nice Bb (I really like my Freeman Tweaked Generation Bb) then is it worth it to spend a fortune on a G? For me I don’t play in sessions so my playing is just at home and that gives me the luxury to play in any key. So for now I have decided no and I play my Guido Alto G which is actually quite nice and inexpensive. I’m afraid a Dixon wouldn’t be much of an improvement (if any) and the next step up would be a whistle costing over 200 euros.
This is just my line of thinking. for me I think the G will either be Guido price, Dixon price, or high end price (over 200 euros). I haven’t found much in between the Dixon & high end price ranges. I figure once I have more experience on the whistles I have, I will be able to justify a high end G, if it’s even necessary.
I’d second the Guido Gonzato choice. Either buy one or make your own. I bought a low D from Guido as a visual sample and was able to make a very decent G from his plans. I’d sell it to you but I’m kind of proud of it. It’s the only whistle I’ve ever made.
Jerry Freeman makes a pretty nice A tube that works well on his tweaked Gen head. Somebody could encourage him to stretch that one into a G!
Sorry I would love to help, but my favorite G whistles are the Reviol and Bleazey. Two very different instruments, but each are excellent in their own way. Unfortunately, you would have to part with a bit more money.
