Wow, sad news! What an influence he had on the world. I wouldn’t be playing whistles today if I hadn’t seen a guy playing an Overton in a pub in Ireland ten years ago. It was a life changing moment.
My Bernard Overton-made low D, obtained via eBay, led me to the Chiffboard, as I researched what it was all about.
It was first the Overton Low D that brought me back to the music and in it’s way lead me to work with Mike Copeland. I only regret that we only spoke on the phone and never were able to meet in person.
Bernard lives on in every note that’s played on an Overton.

I was really surprised when I say an email from the people at C&F that he had died. Very sad news.
What sad news. Bernard’s whistles and all the other wonderful low whistles spawned from his genius are a marvellous legacy.
My condolences to his family and friends. Bernard certainly came up with the right idea at the right time, and has given us a wonderful gift. I’ve played one of Bernard’s big whistles since 1984, and will have to play a tune for him on it this evening.
Rest in peace, Mr. Overton.
So many in the world have been touched by what he gave.
A fine thing indeed.
My thoughts go with his family and friends.
So sad…My condolences to his family and friends.
It was hearing and seeing Bernard’s whistles being played that first influenced me to want to play low whistle. I have been through a number of Low D whistles always looking for the one that really suited me. But my Overton low F will remain with me. I have taken it all over the world and recorded with it many times. I waited a long time for it but the wait was worth it. It is the best low F I have ever played and nothing else really gives me that same smooth tone and ease of playability. I will treasure it always. Bernard Overton was a legend and his ideas influenced every modern low whistle maker. He will be sorely missed.

Sad news, indeed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Overton family. I’ll always be grateful for the precious legacy he has given us.
I can’t believe it, my prayers go to his family. ![]()
Now this is sad news indeed! He was a great man, who really left his mark in the musical world. Thanks, Bernhard, for all the joy you gave to us! You won’t be forgotten. Let your beautiful instruments now sound in the heavenly choire as well!

This is very sad news. The low whistle family has lost it’s founding father. It is a measure of the love and respect I have for his instruments that I own nine of them. I never met him personally and that is something I shall always regret. RIP, Bernard.
I shall always remember this great man, when playing on Overtons… ![]()

Such a loss for the music community!
Sincere condoleances to the familly and relatives.

Sad news, the father of the Low Whistle has gone. My condolences to the family of Mr.Overton and to all his friends. And Colin and Brigitte, also especially to you. And I hope, Colin, you’ll keep on making Overtons in Bernard’s spirit. You’re the best!
The spirit remains.
I’m deeply saddened. Thank you Mr. Overton.
I had a long chat on the phone with Colin Goldie today. Always a pleasure and it had been too long. He pointed out that Bernard had recently been on stage at the Big Whistle Weekend 2008 with Joanie Madden and Phil Brown and that photos were taken. I was able to locate this link:
