I’ve been having something of an " affair " with an Aulos one keyed {440} flute I picked up at the Kellishek workshop last spring. Please don’t misunderstand, I’ll never part with or for long put down the M&E R&R or the Olwell or Cox bamboo flutes but the appeal of the sweet sounding small holed flute fills a need in the various types of music I like to play. Fermoy Lasses on the M&E and Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring on the Aulos, that sort of thing . So, which direction to go if I want to move up to something 'better ’ than the Aulos. Ralph Sweet has what appears to be the next cheapest model and the sound James {peeplj} gets on this flute on his website is very nice.If money were no object I’d just call Von Huene and see whats available. But being just a porch player for my own and my wifes entertainment it’s hard to justify $1200 or $1500 for that . Does anyone have any experiance with Vintage Instruments in Philidelphia? They seem to have several old one keyed flutes most of the time.Though I’d not care to end up with a flute with an A of 452 though an A of 392 would be fun.I believe Kellishek’s stocks Moeck and Mollenhoeur [sp?] but there’s that $1200 or more price tag.
Any comments or past experience would be helpful. Thanks,
Bruce
I absolutely love my Rod Cameron, Grenser model flute. The basic model costs about US$1500, so it’s about 3 times as expensive as the Aulos, but it’s worth every cent. Believe it or not the Aulos is actually a decent flute, so to move up you should consider one of the top models.
Other than that, hang out on the EARLYFLUTE group in Yahoo and get to know the people there. Maybe put a question there, see if anyone has an used flute they’d like to sell. PM me if you want more suggestions that i’d rather not post in the public forum. I’ve had a Ralph Sweet traverso in the past, and i think it’s ok but not really a step up from the Aulos.

Some good info from Glauber there about the Earlyflute group;I ‘lurk’ there fairly regularly.

Thanks for that link, Kevin!
There’s even someone there who will rent traversos, or sell you one over a period of 2 years with monthly payments!
