I am looking for a quality b natural whistle. Happy to either pay or trade.
Trade items include, Cillian O’Brian tweaked high D, Burke narrowbore aluminium high D and Overton/Goldie b flat.

I made one myself out of a Generation B flat.

It’s pretty easy to do, all you need is a good-playing Generation B flat on which the top is removable, a saw, a file, and an electronic tuner.

  1. chop off the top of the tube until xoo ooo and xxo ooo are in tune to the new pitch. (Ignore the other notes for now.)

  2. now chop off the bottom of the tube until xxx xxx is in tune to the new pitch.

  3. you will now find that xxx xxo and xxx xoo are flat. Carve out these two holes, and Bob’s your Uncle.

Why not send a pm to Erle Bartlett of Syn Whistles. He makes a nice B nat body for his whistle set, so maybe he can make a B nat whistle for you.

What amount of chopping (ballpark) are you talking about? Milimeters, fractions of inches? Looking for some general figure to use as a starting point for experimentation.

Certainly more than a few millimeters from each end of the tube. Several previous threads have given measurements for turning a Geb Bb into a B whistle. It is still good form to do things by ear though.

Here’s a reference for going from Bb to B by billh on the pipe forum.

I don’t have a B whistle that I modified here to measure. Looking back through my notes I find some scribbling that indicates that you take ~12-13mm off of the top of the tube and ~4mm off of the bottom of the tube. You’ve got a little bit of leeway on the top of the tube since it can move in and out of the mouthpiece some. So start there. Keep PCP’s procedure in mind from there on.

Since Generations vary as to tube length, rather than say how much I chopped off (which I can’t determine now anyway) I will say how much is left.

From the centre of the top fingerhole to the top of the tube is 12.5cm.

From the centre of that same fingerhole to the bottom of the tube is 17.5cm.

Total tube length 30cm.

Here’s the family portrait of my Generation whistles, from the left Low A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, and the little unmentionables.

My B plays pretty well in tune but one of Jerry Freeman’s will play more in tune than a homemade one, probably.
