Autotuner and Just Intonation

Tatsuaki Koroda has brought out a new version of the Autotuner, with a few new features. I’ll document their operation to update the help notes, but in the meantime, those with an interest in Just Intonation might find his approach interesting.

Firstly, download at

http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/~tuner/tuner_e.html

Unzip the downloaded files and run shaku8.exe. The current Help notes will assist you to understand most of the features.

You will find the Just Intonation option at the bottom of the Options pull-down. As you play notes into the tuner, it will display little markers on the Equal Temperament meter, with their ratios to the tonic note beside them. So at a glance, you can see where you are in both ET and JT.

Now, the tonic is chosen by the key buttons at the bottom right of the tuner. Note he only gives the Western flute a key of C, but if you choose one of the Japanese flutes (eg Tozan style Shaku8) from the Instruments menu, or by tabbing with the instruments buttons, you can then have your choice of tonics.

ACK! Last update for Mac still 2002. Still none for OSX.

Still no conical wooden flute section? :sniffle:
This is a great tuner.

Oh that does look cool, :astonished: now if I only had my mike with me…

Going to be greater, I’ve been talking to Tatsuaki about having a graphing function for frequency deviation (currenly it will list the deviations but a list is very hard to interpret). He liked the idea but warns it will take a little time to implement.

I toyed with proposing the idea of a conical wooden flute section, but realised we’d need to include early baroque flute, later baroque flute, 4 key, 5 key, 6 key, 8 key, 9 key, 10 key, 13 key, Siccama, Clinton, Pratten, Briccialdi, Reform flute, modern keyless, etc, etc, so I decided life’s too short!

Even if we just went with an 8-key, the third octave fingering varies between the early 19th century, the Improved era, the Perfected era and today’s. I can live with masquerading as a Tozan style Shak!

I have been using this tuner for a long time. This update is great. I use it for tuning whistles that I make.
