I didn’t want to ruin the perfection of my previous response. So here is a new post.
I caught Simon in a spelling error. Yeah, he meant to say that. Yeah, he wanted to see if anyone would catch that. He’s exactly the type of person who will never receive, because her could never appreciate, my copy of the speeches of Abraham Lincoln that he personally signed to me when we happened to have both stopped for gas at the same gas station in Lewisburg, WV while he was on his way to the Greenbrier Hotel. It’s all in provenance baby.
Lincoln never stayed at the Greenbrier, he always went to Mt. Lake to dance with Jennifer Grey. I have a picture of her first nose taken by Matthew Brady and signed by Lincoln.
As it happens, I have met a rather large number of celebrities. I don’t usually get an autograph, but I do get a kick out of a bit of interaction, if that seems appropriate. Asking for an autograph can provide that kind of opportunity, especially if you’re a bit star-struck and get tongue-tied.
If the celebrity is someone I truly want to speak with, I try to think of something to say that they would not expect. For example, if I meet an author, I will ask about a lesser-known work of theirs. I find celebrities appreciate that you know more than the obvious about them, and you get more of their time and attention that way. Of course, if having that experience means nothing to you, then you needn’t bother. But then, why go see the Eiffel Tower when you can look at a picture? Why go to a concert when a CD is sonically superior.
-A musical great-aunt left us an autograph book with JP Sousa’s autograph inside, done with flourish on sketched staff complete with clef. Fairbanks/Vega built the wonderful Tubaphone banjos of yore of which there are many still in use. Examples of a lesser known line of Sousaphone banjos have never been found.
-I couldn’t go to the show but sweetie ushered a Boys Of the Lough concert and brought home a CD with liner signed by Cathal and the others.
Can’t say I seek autographs but like the gift and the giver!
