I had a touch of Bronchitis for the last two weeks. I stayed home for a couple of days and finally finished it all. Anyone else read it??
Yep, when it was first published. It was good reading on a long flight from London to LA. I even tried figuring out the solitaire encryption algorithm at the end. Interesting to think about the data haven stuff, and compare it to the reality of Sealand.
I’m still meaning to tackle Quicksilver and The Baroque Cycle one of these days …
I did Quicksilver as well; helps if you are laid up in bed. The only problem is that it is 8 pt type, 2 inches thick and heavy to keep on your chest ![]()
I need to get the other two books from the baroque cycle but will take a rest from Stephenson for a bit. I was going to work on the solitaire encryption as well but started the other book before I got into it. A work mate suggested I read Codebreakers, so that may be my next book.
Or not.
It took two tries but I finshed Crypto last year. The first time I simply couldn’t get into it, second time I couldn’t put it down. Go figure.
I’ve read two volumes of the Baroque and will probably take the third on vacation next week. BTW-- the Baroque Cycle features the ancestors of characters who appear in Crypto
I read it, sure. It was fun. I liked the mathematical formula for ensuring male concentration…
The only other book I’ve read by Stephenson was Snow Crash, so I’m of the opinion that
the man cannot write an ending to save his life, but his middles are pretty good…
I really enjoyed Snow Crash. I haven’t read this yet.
Maybe I’ll give it a whirl.
I read it when it came out. Great read. I completely enjoyed it. I do agree that he’s always had trouble with endings.
I couldn’t get in to the Baroque Cycle books. I may try again though.
