Any good??

I know nothing about concertinas but I came across these on E bay, would any of them be decent starter instruments or would they just be a waste of money?

Eh, well, they won’t kill you, but they’ll be slow, stiff-ish, possibly a bit leaky. I wouldn’t class those as real concertinas but if you want to try something out to figure out if you can get your mind round the in-out thing, it could be worth trying.

On the otherhand, if you suspect you might seriously want to get into it, buy a proper box. it will give you a better idea of what to expect and will have some resale value when you want to upgrade. (The two you linked do not have any real resale value.)

Of the two auctions you linked to, the first one is by Hobgoblin Music and they are a reputable instrument seller. See www.hobgoblin.co.uk . I don’t recognise the other guy.

You might try posting on concertina.net to see if anyone has a cast-off starter box that you could get cheaply.

Thank’s for that Avanutria, after some searching I came acroos this which seems like a decent starter it seems to get some favourable reviews.

I’ve never played one, but I’ve heard of it and seen others recommend it. Here are two threads that talk about the Rochelle:

Thank’s again avanutria.

Here’s another thread topic on the Rochelle:

I’ve had mine for a couple months now and I’ve enjoyed it. I haven’t had the chance to spend as much time as I’d hoped to with it due to constantly practicing for gigs with another instrument but I can’t imagine there’s a better instrument to learn on for such a great price. I don’t think you’ll regret purchasing it.

Cheers,
Johnny
